Tripura becomes the first Indian state to empanel private B.Ed. and D.El.Ed. institutions under the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme for ST students. The initiative, led by Minister Bikash Debbarma, aims to ensure transparency, accountability, and improved access to quality teacher education for tribal youth.
Tripura has achieved a significant milestone in the field of higher education and tribal welfare by becoming the first state in India to introduce the empanelment of private B.Ed. and D.El.Ed. institutions under the Post-Matric Scholarship (PMS) Scheme for Scheduled Tribe (ST) students. The landmark initiative is expected to enhance transparency, accountability, and access to quality teacher education for tribal youth across the state.
The announcement was made by Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, who described the reform as a historic step towards strengthening educational opportunities for students belonging to Scheduled Tribe communities. According to the minister, the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that deserving tribal students can pursue professional teacher education without facing administrative obstacles or delays in receiving scholarship benefits.
Speaking on the occasion, Debbarma said that the empanelment of private B.Ed. and D.El.Ed. institutions under the scholarship scheme would create a more transparent and accountable framework while expanding access to quality teacher training. He emphasized that the initiative is not merely about financial assistance but also about empowering tribal youth with education, skills, and better career opportunities.
To ensure the successful implementation of the scheme, the minister chaired a comprehensive review meeting with senior officials of the Tribal Welfare Department, Government of Tripura, along with representatives of the empanelled private institutions for the Academic Session 2026–27.
The meeting focused on reviewing the implementation strategy, institutional responsibilities, compliance with prescribed government guidelines, and measures to ensure the smooth execution of the scholarship programme. Officials discussed mechanisms to maintain transparency in scholarship disbursement while ensuring that eligible students receive benefits without unnecessary delays.
Representatives of the empanelled institutions were also briefed on their responsibilities regarding student admissions, documentation, compliance with scholarship guidelines, and timely submission of required information. The government stressed that strict adherence to the established framework would be essential for maintaining accountability and protecting the interests of students.
Officials of the Tribal Welfare Department highlighted that the new system would improve monitoring of participating institutions and strengthen the overall administration of the scholarship programme. By bringing private teacher training institutions under the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme, the state aims to widen educational opportunities for tribal students aspiring to become teachers while ensuring quality standards are maintained.
The initiative is expected to encourage more Scheduled Tribe students to enroll in professional teacher education courses by reducing financial barriers and improving access to recognized institutions. It also aligns with the state’s broader objective of strengthening human resource development and creating a skilled teaching workforce from tribal communities.
Minister Debbarma reiterated that education remains one of the most effective tools for social and economic empowerment. He stated that the Government of Tripura is continuously introducing reforms to promote inclusive education and ensure that every eligible tribal student receives equal opportunities for academic and professional growth.
