
Gomati District on Wednesday observed the World Breastfeeding Week in various places of the district including Gomati District Hospital. A special counselling session to support lactating mothers and their family members for behavioural practices on proper methods of breastfeeding held today in the maternity ward of Gomati District Hospital.
Paediatrician Dr. Sharmistha Chowdhury and Dr. Arpan Bhattacharya, gynaecologist and obstetrics of District Hospital have shown mothers the correct postures of breastfeeding. So that children can drink mother’s breast milk in sufficient quantity and in the right way.
During the discussion, Dr. Abhijit Dutta, paediatrician of Gomati District Hospital, said that the mother should breastfeed the baby immediately after birth. Breastfeeding is a precious resource for babies, should be started immediate after the birth. It helps to protect the baby from sepsis, a deadly condition for new born. There is no other option rather than exclusive breastfeeding children up to their six months. The staff nurses of the hospital are now aware enough about this matter. Now the staff nurses of Gomati District Hospital nowadays had to check the bags of pregnant mothers to ensure that there is nothing in the bag which would be given by mouth of new born after birth other than mother’s breast milk. Smt. Uma Das, in charge said.
During the discussion, Dr. Kajal Kumar Das, Medical Superintendent of Gomati District Hospital said that like blood bank, Lactation Management Unit which is called breastmilk bank is being built in the hospital and would be started very soon. This would be a landmark step for life savings of new born children.
He said that breastfeeding does not only help the child but also the mother to prevent diseases like uterine cancer and other diseases. It helps in family planning too. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kamal Riang said post natal mothers should be given adequate nutritious foods. If the mother does not get nutritious food, then the children will not get the nutrients that they get through breastfeeding. Dr. Arjun Saha and Sharmistha Chowdhury said there is no substitute for mother’s breast milk and blood. All members including male of the house should also come forward and lead to support the mothers to breastfeeding to their children.
