In a significant step towards bolstering the well-being of indigenous students in Tribal India, a pioneering workshop titled “Nutrition and Mental Well-being of EMRSs School Children in Tribal India” was inaugurated with great enthusiasm. The event took place at the State Guest House Conference Hall and spanned over four days, focusing on the holistic development of students from various Eklavya Model Residential Schools.

The ceremony saw the participation of 58 representatives hailing from six states—Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and West Bengal. These states collectively convened to deliberate and engage in a comprehensive discourse on the pivotal role of nutrition and mental health in shaping the future of tribal students.

The workshop was inaugurated by Bikash Debbarma, the Minister for Tribal Welfare, who passionately stressed the significance of this initiative. He shared his vision of empowering janajati students by nurturing their physical health and mental well-being. This innovative endeavor, organized collaboratively by the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), under the aegis of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA), Government of India, promises to create a transformative impact on tribal education.

Diverse stakeholders participated, including principals, teachers, and hostel wardens, all key players in shaping the lives of indigenous students. This inclusive approach aims to equip these educators with the necessary tools and knowledge to foster an environment conducive to both nutritional growth and mental wellness.

Dr. Pushkar Kumar, a distinguished Senior Public Health Specialist, outlined the structure of the workshop, emphasizing its four-stage training process. He revealed that similar successful workshops have been previously conducted in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, and Udaipur, Rajasthan, collectively benefiting 112 principals, teachers, and hostel wardens.

The opening ceremony also witnessed the presence of prominent figures, including Indira Mudgal, Deputy Commissioner of National Education Society for Tribal Students; LT Darlong, Secretary of Tribal Welfare Department; and S Prabhu, Director, among other esteemed personalities. Their involvement underscored the collective commitment towards the advancement of indigenous students.

This pioneering workshop marks a significant stride towards nurturing the physical and mental growth of tribal students in Eklavya Model Residential Schools. By uniting representatives from various states, it symbolizes a concerted effort to empower the future custodians of tribal heritage and propel them towards a brighter, healthier tomorrow.
