The Student Federation of India (SFI) and the Tribal Student Union held a press conference on Tuesday to express their opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP). During the conference, SFI Tripura State Secretary Sandipan Deb criticized the policy, claiming it would only produce educated laborers in the job market and undermine the concept of higher education in the country.
Deb announced plans for a mass protest against the NEP throughout the state, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the current education policy and the implementation of a new one. He argued that the existing policy lacks provisions for scholarships for meritorious students and fails to provide benefits to financially disadvantaged students. Furthermore, Deb contended that the NEP would hinder students’ critical thinking abilities.
The SFI leader further criticized the inclusion of open distance learning in the policy, stating that it would only benefit a select group of working individuals while compromising the quality of basic education for students. He alleged that the provision was primarily aimed at increasing institutional enrollment numbers, rather than serving the purpose of genuine education in society.
Protestors voiced their concerns that the ruling government’s intentions behind the policy were to exploit the general public under the guise of education.
