Former Tripura Governor Dr. D. Y. Patil passed away at 90 in Kolhapur. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and other leaders paid tribute to the eminent educationist, philanthropist and institution builder, remembering his lasting contributions to education, healthcare and public service across India.

India has lost one of its most respected educationists, philanthropists and institution builders with the passing of former Tripura Governor Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao (D. Y.) Patil, who died in Kolhapur on Tuesday at the age of 90 due to age-related health complications. His demise marks the end of an extraordinary journey dedicated to education, healthcare and public service, leaving behind a legacy that has touched millions of lives across the country.

Tributes poured in from political leaders, academicians and citizens, who remembered Dr. Patil as a visionary leader whose contributions transformed higher education in India. Among those paying homage was Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the former Governor.

In a message shared on social media, Dr. Saha described Dr. Patil as an eminent educationist and respected public figure who devoted his life to nation-building through education and social welfare. He highlighted Dr. Patil’s immense contributions to educational institutions, healthcare initiatives and philanthropy, while praying for eternal peace for the departed soul.

Born on October 22, 1935, Dr. D. Y. Patil dedicated his life to creating educational opportunities for young people. His efforts earned him the prestigious Padma Shri in 1991, recognising his exceptional contribution to society. Over the years, he established the renowned D. Y. Patil Group, which today manages more than 182 educational institutions and seven deemed universities across India. These institutions have produced thousands of graduates in medicine, engineering, management, law and other professional fields, making a significant contribution to the country’s educational development.

Apart from his achievements in education, Dr. Patil also enjoyed a distinguished career in public life. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Maharashtra before taking on constitutional responsibilities as Governor. He served as the Governor of Tripura from 2009 to 2013, during which he encouraged initiatives aimed at strengthening higher education and expanding academic opportunities for students in the northeastern state.

Following his tenure in Tripura, Dr. Patil also served as the Governor of Bihar and later held the additional responsibility of Governor of West Bengal, earning respect across political lines for his dedication to constitutional values and public welfare.

His passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from across India. Political leaders, educational institutions and social organisations have acknowledged his lifelong commitment to empowering future generations through quality education and accessible healthcare.
