BJP grassroots unrest is growing over seat-sharing with TIPRA Motha ahead of Tripura ADC Village Committee elections, with discontent reported in Sabroom and Raimavally and a BJP party office allegedly set ablaze in West Ludhua.
Serious discontent appears to be brewing among sections of BJP’s grassroots workers over seat-sharing with alliance partner TIPRA Motha ahead of the ADC Village Committee elections, with resentment surfacing in both South Tripura and the Raimavally area of Dhalai district. In Sabroom, the anger allegedly culminated in a BJP party office being set ablaze.
The most serious incident was reported from West Ludhua ADC Village under Sabroom sub-division, where a BJP office at Ludhua Uporer Bazar was allegedly torched by disgruntled party workers following reports that all seven Village Committee seats in the area had been conceded to TIPRA Motha.
According to local sources, the decision to leave the BJP without a candidate in any of the seven seats triggered sharp resentment among a section of workers who claimed they had worked for years to build the party organisation in the area.
The office was reportedly engulfed in flames within a short time, heightening tension and prompting party leaders to rush to the area in an effort to contain the situation.
Discontent has also surfaced in neighbouring East Ludhua, where TIPRA Motha has reportedly been allotted four of the seven seats, leaving three for the BJP. Some BJP workers have questioned the rationale behind giving the ally a larger share and expressed concern over the political future of grassroots functionaries if opportunities to contest are surrendered in areas where they have built the organisation.
The identity of those responsible for the alleged arson and the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, however, were yet to be officially established. Details of any police action were also not immediately available.
Significantly, resentment over the alliance formula is not confined to Sabroom.
Nearly 150 km away in Raimavally, similar dissatisfaction has reportedly emerged among BJP workers over the distribution of seats under Dumburnagar RD Block.
Of the 19 Village Committee areas there, BJP has reportedly been allotted only five — West Gandachara, Sarma, Laxmipur, Nakachhara and Ranipukur — under the BJP-TIPRA Motha-IPFT understanding.
A section of BJP workers has expressed disappointment over what they consider a disproportionately small share for the party. They argued that while BJP had accommodated and supported alliance partners in previous elections in the interest of maintaining the coalition, its own grassroots strength had not received adequate consideration in the present arrangement.
Questions have also surfaced in Raimavally over candidate selection. Party sources alleged that preparations for filing nominations began even before candidate names were formally announced and claimed that feedback gathered from grassroots workers regarding the acceptability of prospective candidates was not reflected in all cases.
There has so far been no official response from the BJP’s Mandal or district leadership, or from the alliance partners, to these allegations.
The developments in Sabroom and Raimavally assume significance because they point to a larger challenge confronting the BJP as it seeks to translate its political alliance with TIPRA Motha and IPFT into seat-sharing arrangements at the grassroots.

While the alliance leadership is seeking to avoid division of votes and present a united front in the Village Committee elections, the formula inevitably requires individual parties to surrender seats where their workers may have nurtured electoral ambitions for years.
For the BJP, the immediate challenge now appears to be managing those aspirations. The alleged burning of its own party office at West Ludhua represents the most dramatic manifestation yet of that resentment.

With nominations underway and campaigning set to gather momentum, the emerging discontent suggests that negotiating an alliance at the leadership level may have been easier than selling its electoral arithmetic to workers on the ground.
