Tripura Food Minister Sushanta Chowdhury launched a free festive food distribution programme for all ration card-holding families. The initiative provides 2 kg flour, 1 kg sugar and 500 grams of semolina to support households during Durga Puja and Diwali celebrations.
Tripura Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury has launched a special festive food distribution programme under which every ration card-holding family in the state will receive 2 kg of flour, 1 kg of sugar and 500 grams of semolina free of cost. The initiative aims to support households during the festive season and ensure that families across economic backgrounds can celebrate Durga Puja and Diwali with happiness and enthusiasm.
The programme was launched as part of the state government’s public welfare initiatives, with the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department undertaking the distribution through the public distribution system (PDS).
As part of the launch, Chowdhury handed over the free food items to ration card beneficiaries under Fair Price Shop No. 1 at Ranirbazar in Jirania subdivision. He also inaugurated the distribution programme at Fair Price Shop No. 61 near Pragati School in Krishnanagar, where departmental officials and local beneficiaries were present.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the initiative reflected the government’s commitment to public welfare and its determination to share the joy of the festive season with every household.
He emphasised that festivals should be celebrated by all sections of society with equal enthusiasm and dignity, irrespective of their economic circumstances. According to him, the government introduced the special assistance programme to ensure that the spirit of Sharadiya Durga Puja and Diwali reaches every family.
“Our objective is to ensure that the joy of the festive season reaches every home. We want every family to celebrate Durga Puja and Diwali with happiness and enthusiasm. This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to stand beside the people and share in their festive celebrations,” Chowdhury said.

Under the special festival package, each eligible ration card-holding family will receive 2 kilograms of flour, 1 kilogram of sugar and 500 grams of semolina. The commodities will be distributed free of charge through the state’s fair price shop network.
The programme has been introduced as a one-time festive benefit to provide additional assistance to consumers during an important period of the year. The distribution is intended to help families manage household requirements and reduce some of the additional expenses associated with festival preparations.
Chowdhury said public welfare remained central to the state government’s policies. He added that the administration was working to ensure that essential commodities reached consumers through the public distribution system in a timely and accessible manner.
The minister also pointed out that rising household expenses could place additional pressure on families during major festivals. The free distribution of essential food items, he said, was intended to provide some relief while allowing people to participate in festive celebrations with greater comfort.
Beyond material assistance, the initiative also seeks to promote social inclusion by ensuring that economically vulnerable households can share in the celebrations. The minister stressed that no family should feel excluded from the festive atmosphere because of financial difficulties.
Officials of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department attended the launch programmes and supervised the commencement of distribution through fair price shops. Beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that the additional food supplies would help them meet their festive needs.
