Tripura Left Front protests alleged obstruction and intimidation of opposition candidates during nomination filing for September 28 Village Committee elections, demanding administrative intervention, security, a level playing field and free participation, while accusing BJP and Tipra Motha of interfering.
The Left Front in Tripura staged a protest march in Agartala on Monday, alleging that opposition candidates were being obstructed and intimidated while attempting to file their nomination papers for the September 28 Village Committee elections.
The protestors marched through the streets of the state capital carrying party flags and placards and raising slogans against what they described as attempts to prevent opposition candidates from participating freely in the electoral process. Following the demonstration, a delegation of Left Front leaders met the District Magistrate and submitted a memorandum seeking immediate administrative intervention.
The Left Front alleged that candidates in several parts of Tripura were facing pressure, threats and various forms of obstruction during the nomination process. The opposition primarily blamed the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its alliance partner, the Tipra Motha Party, for the alleged incidents.
According to Left Front leaders, the administration has a responsibility to ensure that every eligible candidate can submit nomination papers without fear, intimidation or political interference. They argued that the nomination stage is a crucial part of the electoral process because preventing a candidate from filing papers could effectively eliminate competition in a constituency before voters have the opportunity to make their choice.
Addressing the protesters, Left leaders alleged that attempts were being made in different parts of the state to discourage or prevent opposition candidates from entering the electoral contest. They warned that such incidents could undermine public confidence in the Village Committee elections and raise questions over the credibility of the electoral process.
“Candidates must be allowed to file nominations freely. If they are prevented from doing so, voters are effectively being denied a choice,” the leaders said.
The memorandum submitted to the District Magistrate called for immediate steps to ensure that all candidates were able to complete the nomination process without obstruction. The Left Front also demanded adequate security for candidates during all stages of the elections, including nomination filing, scrutiny of nomination papers, polling and counting.
The Opposition further urged the administration to maintain strict political neutrality throughout the electoral process. It said government officials and the election machinery must ensure that no political party or group was able to influence or interfere with the rights of candidates.
The Left Front also called for individual complaints of obstruction and intimidation to be investigated and appropriate action to be taken wherever violations were established. Leaders said merely accepting complaints would not be sufficient and that the administration needed to take concrete measures to create a level playing field for all contestants.
The Opposition maintained that the right to contest an election is an important element of democracy. According to the Left Front, restricting a candidate’s ability to file nomination papers could deprive voters of meaningful electoral alternatives and weaken the competitive nature of the elections.
The protest comes at a time of heightened political activity in Tripura ahead of the Village Committee elections. Political parties have stepped up preparations, with candidates being finalised and organisational machinery being mobilised across the state.
The BJP and Tipra Motha have also been holding discussions on seat-sharing arrangements ahead of the polls, while opposition parties, including the Left Front, are preparing their candidates and campaign strategies.

The Left Front warned that it could intensify its agitation if the administration failed to address the allegations and ensure equal opportunities for all candidates. The party demanded that the authorities act promptly to prevent further incidents during the remaining stages of the nomination process.

The Village Committee elections are expected to be closely watched amid growing political activity in Tripura. The Opposition has stressed that ensuring free participation, adequate security and impartial administration will be essential for maintaining public confidence in the electoral process.
The BJP and Tipra Motha did not immediately respond to the allegations made by the Left Front on Monday.
