Tripura Village Committee polls see BJP, TIPRA Motha and IPFT forge grassroots seat-sharing alliances, while Congress plans to contest independently across key ADC areas, setting the stage for a competitive electoral battle ahead of the upcoming TTAADC elections.
The political contest for the upcoming Village Committee (VC) elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) is beginning to take shape, with the BJP, TIPRA Motha and IPFT moving towards a coordinated grassroots electoral strategy in several areas, while the Congress has chosen an independent approach.
The nomination process on Monday provided the first significant indication of the competing strategies being adopted by political parties ahead of the crucial elections in Tripura’s tribal areas. The BJP, TIPRA Motha and IPFT have started working on seat-sharing arrangements in different blocks, seeking to consolidate their organisational strength at the village level.
At Jolaibari, the three parties jointly filed nominations after reaching an understanding over seat sharing. The arrangement came after discussions involving the BJP’s central leadership, followed by a tripartite meeting among representatives of the BJP, TIPRA Motha and IPFT.
Following the discussions, candidates from the alliance proceeded to the block office to submit their nomination papers. Jolaibari block comprises 10 ADC villages with a total of 48 wards. As many as 84 candidates have filed nominations for the elections.
Leaders of the three-party understanding expressed confidence about securing a decisive victory in the area. They said their electoral focus would include ensuring that Central government welfare and development schemes reach people living in the ADC areas.
A similar alliance-building exercise was underway at Santirbazar, where senior leaders of the BJP, TIPRA Motha and IPFT held discussions at the PWD Dak Bungalow to finalise a seat-sharing arrangement for the 14 Village Committees under Bagafa block.
According to the formula being discussed, the BJP and TIPRA Motha are expected to contest seven Village Committees each. The alliance partners are also considering accommodating the IPFT by leaving two seats for the party. Joint nomination filing by the alliance partners is expected to take place on Tuesday.
Santirbazar MLA Pramod Reang, MDC Kenaram Reang and senior leaders representing the three parties participated in the discussions. The negotiations at Bagafa are significant as they indicate an attempt by the parties to translate their broader political understanding into a practical electoral arrangement at the grassroots.
Village Committee elections often involve highly localised political equations, candidate networks and community-level organisational strength. Therefore, the success of the seat-sharing formula could play an important role in determining whether the alliance can maintain unity beyond the larger political understanding among the three parties.
However, the situation in Lefunga presented a different picture. Of the 10 Village Committees in the area, TIPRA Motha candidates had so far submitted 39 nominations covering five committees. No nominations had been filed by the BJP, IPFT, CPI(M) or Congress at the time of the latest update.
Block Returning Officer Prasenjit Bhowmik said the administration had completed preparations to ensure that the elections are conducted peacefully and in a free, fair and fearless manner. Necessary security and administrative arrangements are also being put in place at polling stations.
Meanwhile, the Congress has signalled a more aggressive independent strategy at Gournagar. Both Congress and BJP candidates filed nominations there on Monday.
Congress MLA Birajit Sinha announced that his party would contest all 25 seats across the three ADC Village Councils under Gournagar RD Block. According to Sinha, candidates were selected unanimously at the local level, with the party scheduled to begin its full-fledged campaign from September 11.

Sinha sought to portray the Congress as an alternative to the major political forces that have held influence in Tripura’s tribal areas. He alleged that people had remained deprived under the erstwhile Left Front government, the present BJP-led government and TIPRA Motha’s administration.
The Congress MLA also claimed that improvements in drinking water supply, roads, electricity and other basic amenities in Janajati areas began after the Congress captured the Panchayat Samity.

With the nomination process gathering pace, the emerging political alignments suggest that the Village Committee elections are likely to become a key test of grassroots political strength in Tripura’s tribal areas. The polls will also test whether the BJP-TIPRA Motha-IPFT understanding can effectively translate into coordinated action at the village level, while the Congress seeks to challenge the emerging alliance by contesting independently.
