Four days after the declaration of Assembly Poll results, CPM Politburo leader Manik Sarkar said on Monday that BJP could not secure the support of 60 per cent of the voters owing to its dismal performance during the last five years. Echoing CPM State Secretary Jitendra Choudhury’s explanation, Sarkar commented split in the opposition votes helped BJP to retain power.
Reacting on the poll result, Sarkar said, “While the BJP’s performance was zero during the last five years, the economic growth of the state came down drastically under their rule. So, people voted against the BJP this time.”
He continued and said, “The division of anti-BJP votes helped the BJP get a slender majority in this election even after getting lesser votes’.
Without naming any party, the CPM leader added that some forces which in fact talked against the ruling party had a mutual understanding with it.
Manik Sarkar said, “The BJP is reeling under acute frustration after its number of seats in the Assembly as well as total votes reduced in 2023 compared to 2018 elections. It has retained power for the second term- however, party supporters are unhappy”.
Besides, Manik Sarkar expressed concern over the sporadic incidents of poll violence and said, “Such incidents are taking place with an aim to hatch political hatred, which is against the democratic system of the country. This is the reason why people did not want the BJP back in power.”
“There is a need to maintain peace in the state as the Election Commission wanted zero violence related to the poll. In that case, the police are responding to the cases in some cases, but the Police failed to control the miscreants and maintain peace.
