The Tripura government intensified inspections of over 60 government schools, issuing show-cause notices to several teachers and education officials for negligence. The drive aims to improve education quality, strengthen accountability, enhance classroom learning, and ensure effective implementation of government education programmes across the state.

The Tripura government has intensified its inspection of government schools across the state, initiating disciplinary action against several teachers and education officials after instances of negligence and administrative lapses were detected during an extensive monitoring exercise aimed at improving the quality of education.

Officials of the School Education Department said on Wednesday that the inspection campaign is being spearheaded by School Education Department Secretary Dr Milind Dharmrao Ramteke, who is personally leading teams to assess the functioning of schools in different districts. The inspection teams also include Director of Elementary Education Harshita Biswas, Deputy Director of Education Rudradeep Nath, and Officers on Special Duty (OSDs) of the Elementary Education Department.

According to the department, more than 60 government schools across various districts have been inspected over the past several days. The inspections form part of a broader initiative to strengthen the teaching-learning environment, improve academic standards, and ensure greater accountability among teachers and education officials.

During the inspections, officials conducted a comprehensive review of classroom teaching practices, students’ learning progress, classroom management, school administration, and the implementation of various government-sponsored education programmes. The exercise also evaluated the overall academic atmosphere within schools to identify areas requiring improvement.

A key focus of the inspection drive was the implementation of the Nipun Tripura Mission, which seeks to ensure foundational literacy and numeracy among children. Inspecting teams also reviewed the functioning of the PM Poshan programme, pre-primary education, activity-based learning methods, student participation during classroom sessions, and the effective use of teaching-learning materials.

Officials stated that while many schools demonstrated satisfactory academic performance and effective classroom practices, the inspection teams also detected several cases of negligence and irregularities in the discharge of official duties.

Following these findings, the School Education Department initiated immediate departmental proceedings against those found responsible. Show-cause notices have been issued to several teachers seeking explanations regarding their alleged negligence. In addition, salaries of some teachers have been temporarily withheld pending completion of disciplinary proceedings.

The department also took administrative action against one Block Resource Person (BRP) and one Cluster Resource Person (CRP) after they were found allegedly negligent in performing their assigned responsibilities. Their salaries have likewise been withheld until further orders.

Officials further said that disciplinary action has also been initiated against headmasters and teachers who failed to maintain proper coordination with inspecting BRPs and CRPs or did not cooperate during the inspection process. Show-cause notices have additionally been served on headmasters and headmistresses of schools where deficiencies were identified in the management of primary sections.

Despite the disciplinary measures, the Education Department highlighted that the inspection exercise is not solely intended to identify shortcomings. Schools that demonstrated regular academic activities, effective classroom instruction, proper school management, and innovative efforts to improve educational standards were also appreciated by the inspection teams.

According to officials, recognising well-performing institutions and teachers is equally important in encouraging best practices across the state’s education system. The inspection exercise aims to create an environment where accountability is balanced with academic support and professional development.

The intensified inspection campaign follows directions issued by the Chief Minister during a recent review meeting, where the School Education Department was instructed to prioritise regular school inspections and strengthen academic monitoring throughout the state.

Education Department officials said the government’s primary objective is to improve the quality of education in government schools through continuous monitoring, enhanced accountability, and sustained school-based academic support. The initiative is also expected to ensure age-appropriate learning outcomes for children while promoting effective implementation of government education schemes.

Officials maintained that regular inspections will continue in the coming weeks as part of the government’s long-term strategy to strengthen Tripura’s school education system and enhance learning outcomes across government institutions.

Meanwhile, there was no immediate response from the teachers or education employees against whom disciplinary action, including show-cause notices and salary withholding, has been initiated by the department.
