Tripura’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) reached Rs 89,682 crore in 2024-25 while per capita income rose to Rs 1.93 lakh, official data revealed during Statistics Day 2026 in Agartala, highlighting economic growth, Census 2027 preparations, and data-driven governance initiatives.

Tripura has registered significant economic progress over the last two financial years, with the state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) increasing from Rs 70,633 crore in 2022-23 to an advance estimate of Rs 89,682 crore in 2024-25. Alongside this growth, the state’s per capita income has risen substantially from Rs 1.54 lakh to Rs 1.93 lakh during the same period, according to official data released during the state-level observance of the 20th Statistics Day at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala.

The Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), Government of Tripura, organised the programme to commemorate the 133rd birth anniversary of renowned statistician Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, widely regarded as the father of modern statistics in India. The event brought together senior government officials, statistical experts, academicians, students, and departmental representatives to discuss the growing importance of data-driven governance and evidence-based policymaking.

Planning (Statistics), Tribal Welfare, and Handloom, Handicrafts and Sericulture Minister Bikash Debbarma was scheduled to attend the programme as the chief guest but could not participate because of other official engagements. The event was attended by Director of Census Operations Ratan Biswas as the special guest, while Director of Economics and Statistics Devananda Reang presided over the function.

During his address, Director of Census Operations Ratan Biswas highlighted the importance of Census 2027 and outlined the roadmap for its implementation. He informed participants that the house listing phase of Census 2027 is scheduled to begin in August this year. Biswas stressed that reliable census data plays a crucial role in helping governments formulate development policies, allocate resources effectively, and implement welfare programmes based on accurate demographic and socio-economic information.

The programme also reflected the national theme for Statistics Day 2026, announced by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, titled “Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data.” The theme focuses on strengthening administrative databases through data standardisation, interoperability, institutional collaboration, and efficient data sharing to improve governance and public service delivery.

Officials said that more than 250 participants, including heads of various government departments, statistical personnel, faculty members, researchers, and students, attended the event. The large participation underscored the increasing recognition of statistics as a vital component of public administration and developmental planning.

As part of the programme, the Directorate of Economics and Statistics showcased several ongoing statistical initiatives. Officials presented updates on the National Sample Survey (NSS) 81st Round and detailed the preparatory work being undertaken for Census 2027, including house listing operations, population enumeration, and digital self-enumeration facilities aimed at improving efficiency and public participation.

The Directorate also demonstrated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Monitoring Web Portal, developed in collaboration with the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala. The portal has been designed to monitor the state’s progress toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through data-driven indicators and regular statistical updates.

Another major highlight of the event was the release of the publication “Tripura At-a-Glance, 2025-26,” which compiles key socio-economic indicators covering sectors such as agriculture, industry, education, healthcare, employment, infrastructure, and demographic trends.

The latest economic figures released during the programme indicate that Tripura continues to witness steady growth in both its overall economy and individual income levels. The increase in GSDP to Rs 89,682 crore and the rise in per capita income to Rs 1.93 lakh reflect improving economic activity, expanding development initiatives, and stronger public investment across sectors. Officials noted that accurate statistical systems, comprehensive surveys, and timely census operations remain essential for sustaining this momentum and ensuring that future policy decisions are guided by reliable and comprehensive data.
