Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the Land Port Management System (LPMS) at Agartala, Srimantapur and Sabroom land ports, strengthening smart border management, trade facilitation and national security along the India-Bangladesh border. The digital platform enhances cargo and passenger processing, transparency, connectivity and operational efficiency across India’s land ports.
In a major step towards strengthening India’s border infrastructure, enhancing national security and facilitating seamless cross-border trade, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday launched the Land Port Management System (LPMS) at the Agartala, Srimantapur and Sabroom Land Ports along the India-Bangladesh border.
The launch of the state-of-the-art digital platform marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to modernize border management through technology-driven solutions. The LPMS is designed to integrate operations across multiple land ports into a unified digital ecosystem, ensuring efficient, transparent and secure movement of cargo and passengers.
The newly introduced platform enables real-time exchange of logistics and regulatory information among various stakeholders. Officials said the system brings land ports on par with advanced digital operational frameworks already in place at airports and seaports across the country.
Alongside the launch of LPMS, Amit Shah also inaugurated newly-developed stakeholder accommodation facilities at the Dawki Land Port in Meghalaya and the Srimantapur Land Port in Tripura. The facilities are expected to provide improved infrastructure support for border security personnel, customs officials, transport operators and other stakeholders involved in cross-border trade and border management activities.
The Union Home Minister described the initiative as an important step towards achieving a modern and technology-enabled border management framework that aligns with the vision of a developed India by 2047. The project reflects the government’s strategic focus on strengthening connectivity, improving trade facilitation and ensuring robust national security mechanisms along international borders.
According to officials, the LPMS has been developed as a neutral and open digital platform that will facilitate seamless coordination among government departments, regulatory agencies and private operators. The integration is expected to significantly reduce procedural delays, improve transparency and enhance overall operational efficiency at land ports.
One of the key features of the system is the introduction of end-to-end digital workflows for both cargo and passenger processing. The platform includes online slot booking, digital payment systems, cargo tracking mechanisms and single-window clearance facilities. These features are expected to streamline operations and reduce paperwork, making border transactions faster and more efficient.
The LPMS has also been fully integrated with several important national digital platforms, including the Indian Customs Electronic Data Interchange Gateway (ICEGATE), the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP) and the motor vehicle ecosystem. This integration will enable seamless interoperability among various government and logistics systems, ensuring efficient and transparent border management.
The Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), a statutory body functioning under the Department of Border Management in the Ministry of Home Affairs, has been entrusted with the responsibility of developing and managing land ports across the country. The authority plays a crucial role in promoting trade, regional connectivity and international cooperation through well-equipped border infrastructure.
Officials informed that the LPMS will not be limited to Agartala, Srimantapur and Sabroom alone. The platform will gradually cover 12 additional land ports managed by the LPAI. These include Attari and Dera Baba Nanak along the India-Pakistan border; Rupaidiha, Raxaul and Jogbani along the India-Nepal border; Darranga along the India-Bhutan border; Petrapole, Dawki, Sutarkandi, Golakganj and Mankachar along the India-Bangladesh border; and Moreh along the India-Myanmar border.
Speaking after the launch, Amit Shah said the initiative reflects the commitment of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government to secure India’s borders while simultaneously promoting legitimate cross-border trade and economic activity.
The Home Minister noted that the establishment of the Land Ports Authority of India was based on recommendations aimed at creating a more effective and secure border management system. He emphasized that under Prime Minister Modi’s vision, land ports have evolved beyond being merely the first line of security and have become important institutions that facilitate trade and economic growth.
