Former Tripura CM Manik Sarkar rejected Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s prediction of CPI(M)’s decline in the 2028 Assembly elections. Sarkar said the Left party will continue fighting for democracy, constitutional rights, livelihoods, and people’s welfare regardless of electoral outcomes, emphasizing free and fair democratic processes.
Former Chief Minister and veteran CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar has strongly countered Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s recent assertion that the CPI(M) would be reduced to zero seats in the 2028 Tripura Assembly elections. Responding to the remark, Sarkar said that the strength of the Left movement cannot be measured solely by electoral outcomes and that the party will continue its struggle for the rights and welfare of the people regardless of the number of seats it wins.
Speaking during a public interaction, Sarkar stated that democratic elections must be conducted in a free and fair atmosphere for the people’s true mandate to emerge. He argued that if citizens are deprived of their right to vote independently and without fear, then any political result is possible, including the possibility of a party losing all representation. However, he maintained that such outcomes would not necessarily reflect the genuine will of the electorate.
Sarkar emphasized that the CPI(M)’s commitment to the people extends beyond electoral politics. According to him, the party’s mission is rooted in protecting democratic values, constitutional rights, social justice, and the livelihoods of ordinary citizens. He said that the CPI(M) has historically stood with workers, farmers, marginalized communities, and economically weaker sections of society, and that this commitment will continue irrespective of whether the party is in power.
The former Chief Minister also alleged that opposition parties are facing increasing pressure and that democratic institutions are being subjected to undue influence. He warned that any attempt to weaken democratic processes or suppress dissent poses a serious threat to the foundations of democracy.
Calling upon citizens, civil society groups, and democratic forces to remain vigilant, Sarkar urged greater participation in movements aimed at protecting constitutional rights and democratic freedoms. He stressed that safeguarding democracy requires collective effort and continuous public engagement.
Reaffirming the Left party’s resolve, Sarkar said the CPI(M) would remain at the forefront of struggles related to wages, employment, welfare measures, and public rights. He asserted that the party’s responsibility toward the people does not depend on electoral victories and that it will continue to raise issues affecting common citizens across Tripura.

His remarks come amid growing political exchanges between the ruling BJP and the opposition CPI(M) as both sides begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections. While the Chief Minister projected a bleak electoral future for the Left, Sarkar insisted that the CPI(M)’s role in defending democracy and advocating for people’s interests will continue regardless of political fortunes.
