Tripura Panchayat Minister Kishor Barman chaired a high-level virtual meeting to review preparations for Special Gram Sabhas on World Environment Day 2026. The initiative focuses on water conservation, plastic waste management, cleanliness drives, tree plantation, and public awareness campaigns to promote sustainable rural development and environmentally friendly villages.
Tripura Panchayat Minister Kishor Barman on Tuesday chaired a high-level virtual preparatory meeting from the State Secretariat ahead of World Environment Day 2026. The meeting brought together elected representatives and administrative officials from all District Councils, Panchayat Samitis, and Gram Panchayats across the state to discuss arrangements for the Special Gram Sabhas scheduled to be held on June 5.
The meeting focused on ensuring the successful organization of the Special Gram Sabhas in every Gram Panchayat, with a strong emphasis on transforming the observance of World Environment Day into a people’s movement dedicated to environmental protection and sustainability.
Addressing the participants, Minister Barman highlighted the urgent need for collective efforts to tackle environmental challenges and directed local bodies to prioritize several key initiatives during the upcoming programmes. These include water conservation measures, effective plastic waste management, cleanliness and sanitation drives, large-scale tree plantation campaigns, and awareness programmes aimed at educating citizens about environmental responsibility.
The minister stressed that the success of these initiatives would largely depend on grassroots implementation and active participation from local communities. He urged Panchayat representatives and administrative officials to ensure maximum public involvement in all activities associated with World Environment Day.
“Environmental protection cannot be achieved through government initiatives alone. It requires active participation from every citizen. We must work together to build clean, green, and environmentally friendly villages for future generations,” Barman said during the meeting.
According to officials, the Special Gram Sabhas will serve as important platforms for engaging directly with rural communities on environmental issues. The gatherings are expected to encourage discussions on sustainable development practices, promote awareness regarding natural resource conservation, and inspire residents to adopt eco-friendly habits in their daily lives.
During the meeting, detailed guidelines were shared regarding the implementation of various environmental programmes at the village level. Local bodies were instructed to give special attention to awareness campaigns focusing on reducing plastic pollution, conserving water resources, maintaining cleanliness in public spaces, and increasing green cover through plantation drives.
The Panchayat Minister also called upon all sections of society to contribute to the environmental movement and strengthen efforts aimed at creating cleaner and healthier surroundings. He emphasized that World Environment Day should not remain a symbolic observance but should become a catalyst for long-term ecological action and sustainable development across rural Tripura.
Officials and representatives participating in the virtual meeting assured the minister of their full cooperation and commitment to ensuring the successful execution of the planned programmes. They also pledged to mobilize widespread community participation and make the Special Gram Sabhas impactful and result-oriented.
