Government Teacher Training College, Kumarghat, faces infrastructure deficiencies, hostel shortages, staff scarcity, and water supply problems. Principal Dr. Nibas Chandra Shil has urged the Tripura government to improve facilities, appoint additional staff, expand hostels, and ensure better support for over 350 trainee teachers.
The Government Teacher Training College at Kumarghat in Tripura’s Unakoti district continues to grapple with significant infrastructure deficiencies, hostel-related challenges, and an acute shortage of support staff, raising concerns over the quality of facilities available for aspiring teachers. The institution’s principal has called for urgent government intervention to strengthen the college’s infrastructure and administrative support.
Established in 2015 with the objective of preparing future educators, the Government Teacher Training College has been serving hundreds of students every year. Despite completing more than a decade of operation, several long-pending issues remain unresolved, affecting both academic and residential life on the campus.
Principal Dr. Nibas Chandra Shil said the college currently enrolls nearly 350 students annually and is supported by 17 teaching faculty members. While a limited number of office staff are available, he pointed out that the institution lacks adequate non-teaching personnel to efficiently manage administrative responsibilities. According to him, additional manpower is essential for the smooth functioning of the college.
Hostel infrastructure has emerged as one of the institution’s biggest challenges. The boys’ hostel has the capacity to accommodate around 80 to 100 students, whereas the girls’ hostel can house only 60 to 65 students. With the number of female trainees steadily increasing each year, the available accommodation has become insufficient, forcing authorities to adjust more students within limited space.
The principal also highlighted recurring drinking water shortages in both hostels during prolonged power outages and load-shedding. Since the water supply system depends on electricity, interruptions in power leave hostel residents without access to adequate drinking water, creating inconvenience and health-related concerns.
Another pressing issue is the shortage of beds in the girls’ hostel. As admissions continue to rise, hostel authorities have been compelled to accommodate more students than the available infrastructure was originally designed to support. This has resulted in overcrowding and limited facilities for boarders.
Administrative challenges further compound the situation. Since the college was established, no government-appointed permanent hostel warden has been posted. As a result, two women faculty members have been managing hostel responsibilities alongside their regular teaching duties, increasing their workload and placing additional pressure on the institution.

Dr. Shil urged the Tripura government to take immediate steps to improve the college’s infrastructure by expanding hostel facilities, ensuring uninterrupted water supply, appointing adequate non-teaching staff, and creating permanent hostel warden posts. He stressed that strengthening these essential services would significantly improve the learning environment and provide better residential facilities for trainee teachers, ultimately contributing to the development of quality education in the state.
