Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Tripura to review Indo-Bangladesh border security, assess fencing progress, and discuss smart surveillance systems. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said the visit will focus on strengthening border management, while also covering regional connectivity, investment promotion, and the Pushpabanta Palace heritage hotel project.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to visit Tripura this week to review border security infrastructure and assess the progress of fencing along the Indo-Bangladesh border, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced on Tuesday. The visit is expected to focus on strengthening border management and exploring the introduction of advanced smart surveillance technologies along sensitive stretches of the international frontier.
Speaking to reporters in Agartala after attending an official programme, Dr. Saha said border security and fencing-related issues would remain the central agenda of the Home Minister’s visit. According to him, Shah will evaluate existing security arrangements and identify areas that require immediate intervention to improve monitoring and prevent cross-border challenges.
“Border fencing and security will be the main focus of the Home Minister’s visit. Although it may not be possible for him to physically inspect every problematic section, he will visit some critical locations where urgent attention is needed,” Dr. Saha said.
The Chief Minister further revealed that the Central Government is considering the implementation of smart border management systems in Tripura. The initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing security infrastructure across eastern and northeastern states sharing international borders. Similar smart surveillance mechanisms are also expected to be introduced in Assam and West Bengal.
The proposed technology-driven system is expected to strengthen surveillance capabilities, improve real-time monitoring, and address security concerns in difficult and vulnerable border areas. Authorities believe the use of modern technology will significantly improve border management efficiency while reducing operational challenges faced by security personnel.
According to official information, Amit Shah will arrive in Agartala on June 4. While some official engagements are scheduled on the day of his arrival, major programmes are expected to take place on June 5.
Besides reviewing border security measures, the Home Minister is also expected to participate in an event linked to the redevelopment of the historic Pushpabanta Palace. The royal property is being transformed into a luxury heritage hotel while preserving its architectural and cultural significance. The state government had earlier signed an agreement with the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), a Tata Group enterprise, to undertake the redevelopment project.
Dr. Saha also stated that he will make two key presentations during the upcoming North Eastern Council (NEC) meeting. One presentation will focus on attracting greater investments to the Northeast, while the other will address regional connectivity and infrastructure development.
He said connectivity bottlenecks continue to be a major challenge for the region, and discussions at the NEC meeting will explore strategies to strengthen transportation networks and accelerate infrastructure expansion. Other chief ministers from the Northeast are also expected to present recommendations related to sectors assigned to them.
