Tamil Nadu CM Vijay is set to expand his Cabinet today as Congress prepares to join the state ministry. The move comes after the ruling coalition secured majority support in the Assembly, while several major portfolios remain vacant amid ongoing political realignments.
The Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to undergo its first Cabinet expansion on Thursday, marking a major political development in the state following weeks of coalition negotiations and post-election realignments.
The swearing-in ceremony for the new ministers is scheduled to be held at 10 a.m. at the Governor’s residence in Guindy. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar will administer the oath of office in the presence of the Chief Minister, senior ministers, alliance leaders, and top government officials.
Sources within the ruling alliance indicated that two legislators from the Indian National Congress are likely to be inducted into the ministry. Their inclusion is expected to formally strengthen the coalition that helped the government cross the majority mark after the Assembly elections produced a fractured mandate earlier this month.
The Cabinet expansion comes at a politically important moment for the state government. Several important departments, including Agriculture, Revenue, Forests, Housing, Cooperatives, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), have remained vacant since the formation of the government. Political observers believe Thursday’s reshuffle is aimed at ensuring smoother administrative functioning while also accommodating coalition partners that played a decisive role in the government’s survival.
The political situation in Tamil Nadu changed rapidly after the Assembly election results were declared on May 4. The elections did not produce a clear majority in the 234-member Assembly, leaving all major parties engaged in intense negotiations to secure support.
Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single largest party but fell short of the required numbers needed to independently form the government. Soon after the results, several parties that were earlier aligned with the DMK-led front shifted their support toward the Vijay-led coalition.
The Congress, along with the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and the Indian Union Muslim League, extended support to the new alliance, helping it secure the numbers required to form the government.
Following the coalition support, Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister on May 10 along with nine ministers. The initial Cabinet included N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, Dr Arun Raj, K.A. Sengottaiyan, P. Venkataramanan, R. Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, Dr T.K. Prabhu, and S. Keerthana.
The government’s strength increased further during the Assembly trust vote. In a major setback for the opposition, 25 legislators from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam reportedly broke ranks and voted in favour of the government. The move pushed the ruling alliance’s effective strength to 144 members, comfortably above the majority mark of 118 in the Assembly.
Despite the strengthened numbers, the coalition has continued to witness discussions over Cabinet representation and portfolio allocation. While Congress is expected to officially join the government through Thursday’s expansion, Left parties have maintained that they will continue offering outside support rather than taking ministerial positions.
Leaders from Left parties have also expressed reservations about reports suggesting possible accommodation of AIADMK dissidents in the government. They cautioned the ruling alliance against rewarding legislators who crossed over during the trust vote.

Political analysts believe the Cabinet expansion will not only help distribute administrative responsibilities more effectively but also test the durability of the newly formed coalition government in Tamil Nadu. With several departments awaiting full-time ministers and alliance equations continuing to evolve, Thursday’s developments are expected to shape the next phase of governance under Vijay’s leadership.
