India-Bhutan relations received a fresh boost as BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb led a parliamentary delegation to Thimphu, holding high-level talks with Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck on bilateral cooperation and parliamentary partnership.

A high-level Indian parliamentary delegation led by former Tripura Chief Minister and BJP Member of Parliament Biplab Kumar Deb is currently on an official visit to Bhutan with the objective of strengthening bilateral cooperation and expanding parliamentary engagement between the two neighbouring nations.

The delegation, representing the India-Bhutan Parliamentary Friendship Group, held important meetings in Thimphu with Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. The discussions focused on reinforcing the longstanding diplomatic relationship shared by India and Bhutan, while also exploring new opportunities for cooperation through parliamentary dialogue and exchanges.

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh is also part of the Indian delegation. Officials described the visit as an important step toward enhancing people-to-people ties and institutional collaboration between the legislatures of both countries.

Speaking during the visit, Deb expressed confidence that regular interactions between lawmakers of the two nations would further strengthen mutual trust, understanding, and strategic cooperation. He said parliamentary diplomacy has emerged as a crucial pillar in advancing bilateral relations and maintaining the close friendship that India and Bhutan have shared for decades.

The BJP MP also extended invitations to both the Bhutanese Prime Minister and the King to visit India in the near future. According to sources familiar with the discussions, the Bhutanese leadership may visit India during an upcoming session of Parliament following the invitation conveyed by the Indian delegation.

Deb further thanked Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for assigning him the responsibility of leading the India-Bhutan Parliamentary Friendship Group. Political observers believe the visit reflects India’s continued commitment to nurturing its special partnership with Bhutan, which remains one of New Delhi’s closest regional allies.

The parliamentary friendship groups were constituted in the Indian Parliament nearly three months ago to strengthen diplomatic outreach and foster deeper engagement with partner countries through legislative cooperation. Significantly, Deb has become the first chairman among these newly formed parliamentary groups to undertake an official foreign visit to the respective partner nation.

The development is being viewed as a major diplomatic initiative aimed at enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors, including governance, regional connectivity, cultural exchange, and strategic coordination. Analysts say such parliamentary interactions complement traditional diplomatic channels and create stronger institutional understanding between the two countries.

India and Bhutan have historically maintained warm and stable ties based on mutual trust, economic cooperation, and close cultural relations. Over the years, both nations have worked together in areas such as hydropower, trade, education, infrastructure, and regional security.
