Eight girl students of Armara Madrasa and Orphanage in Sonamura were injured after sparks from a 33KV power line fell inside the campus during a severe storm. Authorities demanded urgent relocation of electric poles to prevent future accidents.
A sudden storm accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds left at least eight girl students injured after sparks from a 33KV overhead power line reportedly fell inside the premises of Armara Madrasa and Orphanage under Rabindranagar Gram Panchayat in Sonamura on Sunday.
According to madrasa authorities, the incident occurred during intense rainfall when two electric lines allegedly collided due to strong winds. The collision triggered powerful sparks that fell directly into the madrasa compound, injuring several students who were present inside the campus at the time.
Witnesses said panic spread immediately after the sparks struck the area. Local residents and madrasa staff rushed to help the injured students as weather conditions continued to worsen.
A local vehicle owner reportedly transported the injured students to a nearby hospital despite severe difficulties caused by the poor condition of the road. The driver claimed that damaged roads in the area often create major obstacles during medical emergencies and delay urgent transportation.
Officials at the madrasa alleged that sparks from the overhead electric lines have been occurring frequently for a long time, raising serious concerns about the safety of students residing and studying in the institution. The administration appealed to the concerned authorities for immediate relocation of the electric poles and repair of the power infrastructure surrounding the madrasa campus.
Residents of the area also expressed concern over the condition of the power lines, especially during storms and heavy rainfall. They urged authorities to take preventive measures immediately to avoid a larger tragedy in the future.
