Assam BJP Legislature Party meets in Guwahati to elect its leader as NDA prepares to form government for a third consecutive term. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are expected at the May 12 swearing-in ceremony amid celebrations across the state.
The Bharatiya Janata Party Legislature Party convened a crucial meeting in Guwahati on Sunday to elect its leader, marking the next major step toward the formation of the National Democratic Alliance government in Assam for a third straight term. Senior BJP leaders described the occasion as a “joyous day” for the state as preparations intensified for the new government’s swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 12.
The meeting of newly-elected BJP legislators was held at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati. Following the BJP Legislature Party session, a joint meeting of NDA legislators was also planned to formally elect the leader of the ruling alliance in Assam.
Political activities across the state capital gathered momentum as party workers, ministers, and supporters celebrated the alliance’s commanding victory in the Assembly elections. The NDA’s emphatic performance has once again strengthened the BJP’s political position in the northeastern region.
Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia confirmed that the party would formally stake claim to form the government before Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya later in the day.
“We will elect the leader of the BJP Legislature Party today. After this, a meeting with the NDA legislators will be held. Later in the day, we will meet the Governor and stake claim for the government,” Saikia told reporters.
Preparations for the oath-taking ceremony are also underway on a large scale in Guwahati. According to BJP leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national leaders, Union Ministers, and Chief Ministers from several BJP-ruled states are expected to attend the ceremony.
Saikia said the alliance leadership was making extensive arrangements for the event, which is expected to witness the participation of top NDA figures from across the country.
“The preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are in full swing. The Chief Minister will take oath in the presence of Prime Minister Modi, Amit Shah, and senior NDA leaders,” he added.
Outgoing minister Bimal Bora described the election outcome as a reflection of growing public support for the BJP across India. He said voters had shown confidence in the BJP’s governance model while expressing disappointment with the Congress party.
“People are fed up with the misgovernance of Congress. Assam has shown faith in the BJP for several years, and now the political mood across the country is changing,” Bora said.
Highlighting the NDA’s electoral strength, Bora noted that the alliance had secured a dominant majority in the 126-member Assam Assembly.
“In Assam, out of 126 seats, we have won 102. This is an absolute majority,” he stated.
Meanwhile, BJP MLA-elect Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha strongly backed incumbent Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for another term, saying the people of Assam and supporters across the country wanted him to continue leading the state.
“People want Himanta Biswa Sarma to become Chief Minister again. His leadership has earned trust not only in Assam but across the nation,” Purkayastha said.
The MLA-elect, who was earlier associated with the Congress party, also criticised his former political organisation while speaking about the changing political landscape in Assam. He said he was proud to witness the continuation of the BJP-led administration in the state.
Rajya Sabha MP Jogen Mohan also described the development as an important and celebratory moment for Assam. He expressed confidence that the NDA leadership selection process would conclude smoothly and pave the way for the formation of the new government.
“This is a very joyous occasion for Assam. Our NDA Legislature Party leader will be selected today,” Mohan said.

The NDA alliance’s sweeping victory has reinforced the BJP’s influence in Assam, where the party has steadily expanded its organisational and electoral base over the last several years. The upcoming swearing-in ceremony is expected to be one of the biggest political events in the state this year, with national leaders arriving in Guwahati to mark the beginning of the alliance’s third consecutive term in power.
Political observers believe the renewed mandate will further strengthen the BJP’s position in the Northeast and provide momentum ahead of future electoral battles in the region.
