The FIFA Council today approved the Afghanistan women’s football team’s return to international competitions after amending its Governance Regulations in coordination with the Asian Football Confederation. Operating in exile since 2021, the team will now compete in qualifiers and friendlies, with home matches at neutral venues due to security concerns.
FIFA will provide technical and financial support for up to two years to aid reintegration. President Gianni Infantino described the decision as a landmark step to ensure players are not excluded due to circumstances beyond their control.
