Gomati District launches doorstep TB screening using portable X-ray technology, targeting high-risk populations in remote areas. The initiative aims to detect early-stage tuberculosis, expand healthcare access, and screen over 120,000 people free of cost by June 30.

Healthcare delivery in remote regions is undergoing a transformative shift as Gomati District rolls out a doorstep Tuberculosis (TB) screening initiative using portable X-ray technology. The move is designed to bridge critical gaps in early diagnosis and ensure that vulnerable populations receive timely medical attention without the burden of traveling long distances.

The district health administration officially launched field-based screening operations in high-risk areas under the Amarpur Sub-Division, starting with Rajarbag and Kurma. On the very first day, medical teams conducted 77 X-ray screenings, marking a promising start to what officials describe as a large-scale public health intervention.

Leading the initiative, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kamal Reang underscored the importance of accessibility in healthcare delivery. He stated that the program aims to reverse the traditional model of care by bringing diagnostic services directly to people’s homes, especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas. The approach aligns with national health guidelines focused on proactive disease detection and prevention.

The specialized field team includes District TB Officer Dr. Saumik Chakraborty, Dr. Mistu Das, Medical Officer In-Charge of Rajarbag Urban Primary Health Centre, X-ray Technician Pranesh Debbarma, and Senior TB Laboratory Supervisor Gautam Chakraborty. Their coordinated efforts are expected to significantly enhance the district’s capacity to detect TB cases at an early stage.

Dr. Saumik Chakraborty, who has played a key role in implementing the program, highlighted a critical challenge in TB control: early-stage infections often go undetected through conventional clinical examinations and sputum tests. He explained that the introduction of handheld X-ray devices allows healthcare workers to identify abnormalities in lung function more effectively, particularly among high-risk groups.

The screening drive is specifically targeting populations that are more susceptible to TB, including individuals with diabetes, smokers, those with substance dependencies, close contacts of TB patients, healthcare workers, and individuals with a prior history of TB or related illnesses. By focusing on these groups, the administration aims to curb the spread of infection and reduce mortality rates.

Officials have set an ambitious target to screen over 120,000 people free of cost by June 30, maintaining a daily pace of more than 100 screenings. Plans are already underway to deploy additional mobile teams to expand the program’s reach across the district.

Furthermore, the government is expected to supply more handheld X-ray units in the coming weeks. These devices will not only strengthen field operations but will also be integrated into hospital wards to assist patients who are unable to move, ensuring comprehensive diagnostic coverage.

The initiative reflects a broader commitment to public health innovation and community-centered care. By leveraging portable technology and prioritizing accessibility, Gomati District is setting a precedent for how healthcare systems can adapt to meet the needs of underserved populations while advancing the fight against Tuberculosis.
