Ten injured in a devastating Charilam road accident after a high-speed collision between an auto rickshaw and Alto car near a school zone. Locals demand urgent traffic control measures to prevent further deadly crashes in the area.

A serious road accident in Charilam on Thursday morning left ten people injured after a head-on collision between an auto rickshaw and a car near a busy school area, raising fresh concerns over road safety in the region.

The accident took place near a petrol pump adjacent to Atal Bihari Vajpayee Vidyajyoti Higher Secondary School, a location frequently crowded with students and commuters. According to initial reports, an auto rickshaw bearing registration number TR 03 C 2945 collided head-on with an Alto car (TR 01 AA 0529), causing severe injuries to passengers in both vehicles.

Eyewitnesses described the crash as sudden and violent. Local residents quickly alerted the Bishalgarh Fire Service, whose team responded promptly. Fire personnel conducted immediate rescue operations, pulling out trapped passengers and providing first aid at the scene.

All injured individuals were initially transported to Bishalgarh Subdivision Hospital, where doctors administered emergency treatment. Due to the seriousness of their injuries, they were later referred to Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in Agartala for advanced medical care.

The injured have been identified as Babul Hossain (28), Shipon Miah (35), Nuhaba Begum (50), Suhan Hossain (5), Swapna Akter (26), Md. Hasan (4), Kolkha Miah (60), Soumit Debnath (7), Seema Das (32), and Ashok Debnath (72). Several of them, including children and elderly passengers, are reported to be in critical condition.

Police personnel from Bishalgarh Police Station reached the accident site shortly after the incident. Authorities seized both vehicles involved and launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.

A local eyewitness alleged that overspeeding by the auto rickshaw may have triggered the accident. “The auto was moving at a dangerously high speed and lost control before crashing into the car,” the witness told reporters.

This incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of the accident-prone stretch. Residents pointed out that a fatal accident had occurred at the same location just weeks earlier, claiming the life of a man from Gautam Colony. Despite repeated warnings, no permanent traffic control measures have been implemented so far.

With a school on one side and a petrol pump on the other, the area experiences heavy pedestrian and vehicular movement throughout the day. Locals are now demanding immediate administrative intervention, including the installation of traffic signals, deployment of traffic police personnel, and speed regulation measures.

Community leaders stressed that without urgent action, such incidents could become more frequent, endangering lives—especially those of school children. “We cannot wait for another tragedy. Authorities must act now,” a resident said.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials have assured that strict action will be taken based on the findings. Meanwhile, the condition of the injured remains under close medical supervision.
