Tipra Motha releases ADC candidate list amid internal dissent, leadership crisis, and strategic shifts. Pradyot Debbarman skips contest, sparking political debate as party fields 28 candidates for TTAADC elections, replacing key leaders and facing mounting pressure.

The political landscape in Tripura’s tribal belt has intensified ahead of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, as Tipra Motha, the dominant regional force, released its much-anticipated list of candidates amid visible internal dissent and organizational strain. The announcement has triggered widespread reactions within party ranks, with several leaders and workers expressing discontent over ticket distribution.

The party, led by its supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, fielded candidates in all 28 seats of the TTAADC. However, what stood out prominently was Debbarman’s own absence from the electoral fray. He had contested the previous ADC elections from Takarjala-Jampuijala but has now stepped aside, making way for Suraj Debbarma, president of the Youth Tipra Federation (YITF), the party’s youth wing.

Internal Dissent Deepens

Sources within the party indicated that the decision to replace nearly 50 percent of the sitting Members of District Council (MDCs) has led to mounting dissatisfaction. As the day progressed, internal disagreements escalated, reflecting a growing divide between the party leadership and grassroots workers.

The situation reportedly became so tense that the party refrained from holding a formal press conference to announce the candidates. Insiders claimed that Debbarman left the state shortly after being informed that multiple groups of aggrieved party members were heading towards Agartala to voice their concerns.

Adding to the confusion, several Tipra Motha leaders filed their nomination papers independently, organizing grand rallies with supporters even before the official candidate list was made public. This unprecedented move underscored the lack of coordination and the pressure faced by the party leadership.

Strategic Decisions and Political Calculations

Despite the internal turbulence, Tipra Motha has taken a firm stance by contesting all 28 seats. This decision followed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s refusal to enter into a pre-poll alliance with any of its regional allies in the ADC elections. The move signals Tipra Motha’s intent to consolidate its political base and assert dominance in the tribal council.

Several high-profile changes in the candidate list have drawn attention. Key Executive Members, including Rajesh Tripura and Suhel Debbarma, have been dropped. Executive Member Dolly Reang also did not secure a ticket, reportedly due to her alleged proximity to the BJP. A senior party leader suggested that her exclusion was influenced by political considerations after she was denied a ticket by the BJP as well.

In contrast, Chief Executive Member Purna Chandra Jamatia and Chairman Jagadish Debbarma have retained their seats, indicating the party’s confidence in their leadership. Veteran leader and former MLA Rajeshwar Debbarma has been fielded from the Kulai-Champhahour constituency, reflecting a mix of experience and new faces in the lineup.

Notable Candidates and Constituencies

Among the candidates announced, Bhabha Ranjan Reang will contest from Damcherra-Jampui, while Swapan Kumar Chakma has been nominated from Machmara. Umashankar Reang will represent the party in Dasda-Kanchanpur, and Ratish Tripura will contest from Karamchharra.

Other prominent candidates include Hangsa Kumar Tripura from Chhawmanu, Hollywood Chakma from Manu-Chailengta, and Dhirendra Debbarma from Demchhara-Kachuchhrra. Prasmit Debbarma has been fielded from Halahali-Asharambari, while Utpal Debbarma will contest from Maharani-Pur-Teliamura.

The party has also introduced retired civil servant Chandra Kumar Jamatia as its candidate from Maharani-Chelagang, signaling a strategic attempt to bring administrative experience into the political fold.

A Crucial Test Ahead

The unfolding developments indicate that Tipra Motha is entering the ADC elections amid both strength and vulnerability. While it remains a formidable force in the tribal council, the internal dissent and dissatisfaction over candidate selection could impact its electoral performance.

Political analysts believe that how the party leadership manages the current crisis will play a decisive role in determining its prospects. The absence of Debbarman from the electoral contest has also raised questions about the party’s strategy and leadership dynamics.

As the election campaign gathers momentum, all eyes will be on whether Tipra Motha can overcome its internal challenges and maintain its dominance in the TTAADC, or if the cracks within the party will reshape the political equations in Tripura’s tribal regions.
