Tipra Motha faces major setback as MDC and EM join BJP ahead of TTAADC elections in Tripura. Defections boost BJP’s tribal outreach, intensifying political battle in ADC polls with allegations of corruption and development failures.

In a political setback for the Tipra Motha Party ahead of the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, several prominent leaders, including a sitting Member of District Council (MDC) and an Executive Member (EM), formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday.

The high-profile defections took place at the BJP’s state headquarters in Agartala, just hours before the party announced its list of candidates for the crucial ADC elections scheduled next month. The newly inducted leaders have reportedly been accommodated in the BJP’s candidate list, signaling the party’s aggressive strategy to consolidate its position in tribal-dominated areas.

Among the key figures who switched allegiance were TTAADC Executive Member Ananta Debbarma and MDC Saudagar Kaloi from Ampinagar. They were joined by former Tipra Motha district president Rajesh Kumar Debbarma, Tashiram Reang from Damcherra, and Surjabasi Molsom, a former zonal chairman from Gomati district. Their collective move is seen as a major boost to the BJP’s grassroots outreach among indigenous communities.

The joining ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Manik Saha, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, former MP Rebati Tripura, and other senior party leaders.

Speaking at the event, BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee highlighted the momentum building within the party ahead of the polls. He stated that several influential leaders from the TTAADC region are showing interest in joining the BJP and would be inducted in phases. He emphasized that the party’s vision of “Viksit Bharat” and “Viksit Tripura” is attracting leaders who prioritize development-oriented governance.

Bhattacharjee also pointed to the state’s recent budget as evidence of the government’s commitment to tribal welfare. He noted that significant allocations have been made for infrastructure development, cultural preservation, and socio-economic upliftment in tribal areas, reflecting the administration’s focus on inclusive growth.

Chief Minister Manik Saha welcomed the new entrants and reiterated that the development of indigenous communities remains central to the state government’s agenda. He expressed confidence that the BJP would emerge stronger in the TTAADC elections, driven by growing public support and organizational expansion.

Meanwhile, MDC Saudagar Kaloi launched a scathing attack on his former party, alleging widespread corruption within Tipra Motha’s leadership. He claimed that despite raising slogans such as Tipraland and Greater Tipraland, the party had failed to deliver meaningful development in tribal areas.

According to Kaloi, internal conflicts and power struggles have overshadowed the core objective of uplifting indigenous communities. He further alleged that corruption in TTAADC areas has reached alarming levels and accused certain leaders of involvement in extortion activities linked to government contracts.

Kaloi also made a controversial remark regarding the leadership structure of Tipra Motha, stating that while he respects its top leadership, those surrounding it lack integrity. He claimed to possess evidence supporting his allegations and challenged others to demonstrate transparency.

Political observers believe that these defections could significantly alter the electoral dynamics in the TTAADC region, where tribal votes play a decisive role. With the BJP actively expanding its base and incorporating influential local leaders, the upcoming elections are expected to witness intense competition.

The TTAADC polls, scheduled for next month, are likely to serve as a litmus test for both the BJP and Tipra Motha as they vie for dominance in Tripura’s tribal political landscape.
