Tripura Assembly unanimously passes five key bills including Health University Bill 2026. CM Manik Saha announces 10 acres land in Srinagar for new health university, boosting medical education, research, and employment opportunities in the state.
In a legislative development, the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed five crucial bills aimed at strengthening higher education, improving public service delivery, and enhancing regulatory systems across the state.
Among the most notable decisions was the passage of The Tripura University of Health Sciences Bill, 2026, which sets the stage for the establishment of a dedicated health university in the state. Chief Minister Manik Saha informed the House that approximately 10 acres of land have already been identified at Srinagar under Dukli block, near Agartala, for the proposed institution.
Speaking during the second half of the ongoing Budget Session, the Chief Minister emphasized the urgent need for a specialized health university to streamline and regulate medical education in Tripura. Currently, the state has 27 health education institutions, including medical and dental colleges, and this number is expected to rise in the coming years.
“The establishment of an independent health university will ensure better coordination in teaching, examinations, and research activities while maintaining high academic standards,” said Saha. He added that the new institution would play a transformative role in strengthening the healthcare sector and generating employment opportunities for the youth.
According to the government’s plan, while the permanent infrastructure will be developed at the identified site in Srinagar, initial operations of the university may begin from Agartala Government Medical College or from the Health Department building to ensure early functionality.
Apart from the Health Sciences University Bill, the Assembly also passed four other significant legislations: The Tripura Government Technical University Bill, 2026, The Tripura Government Women’s University Bill, 2026, The Tripura Lift and Escalators Bill, 2025, and The Tripura Guaranteed Service to Citizens (First Amendment) Bill, 2026. These bills collectively aim to expand educational infrastructure, improve safety standards in public facilities, and ensure efficient delivery of government services.
The introduction of separate universities for technical and women’s education reflects the state government’s focus on inclusive and specialized higher education. Meanwhile, the amendment to the Guaranteed Service Act is expected to make public service delivery more transparent and accountable.
The unanimous passage of all five bills signals strong political consensus on key developmental priorities in Tripura. Observers believe that these legislative measures will significantly contribute to the state’s long-term growth, particularly in education and healthcare sectors.
