A day after dramatic scenes unfolded outside the Prime Minister’s official residence, where several Opposition leaders were forcibly removed by police during a protest, Members of Parliament from the INDIA bloc assembled outside Parliament House on Wednesday wearing black attire to register their protest against the alleged police brutality and the government’s handling of the NEET paper leak controversy.
The demonstration marked a renewed political offensive by the Opposition, which accused the Centre of suppressing democratic protests while remaining indifferent to the concerns of lakhs of students affected by the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. Clad in black, MPs from the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress and other INDIA bloc constituents gathered near the Parliament complex, carrying banners and raising slogans demanding justice for students and accountability from the government.
Senior Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, joined the protest, symbolizing unity among INDIA bloc parties. Their coordinated demonstration came after Tuesday’s confrontation outside the Prime Minister’s residence, where several Opposition leaders were removed by police while attempting to intensify their campaign demanding the resignation of the Union Education Minister over the NEET paper leak issue.
According to Opposition leaders, the police action against elected representatives amounted to an attack on democratic rights. Congress MPs strongly criticized the government, alleging that peaceful protests were met with excessive force instead of constructive dialogue. Several lawmakers accused the administration of attempting to silence voices demanding transparency in the examination process.
Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari described the situation as an “undeclared emergency,” alleging that the arrest and alleged manhandling of the Leader of the Opposition reflected a serious decline in democratic values. He claimed that constitutional principles were being undermined and asserted that the Opposition would continue its peaceful struggle against what it termed government excesses.
Congress MP K. Suresh also condemned the police action, stating that the black attire worn by Opposition MPs symbolized their protest against the alleged brutality displayed by law enforcement personnel during Tuesday’s demonstrations. He reiterated that the Opposition’s movement was aimed at seeking justice for students and holding the government accountable over the examination controversy.
The protest follows continued student demonstrations over the NEET paper leak issue, which has triggered widespread concern across the country. Opposition parties argue that the controversy has affected the future of lakhs of aspiring medical students and requires immediate corrective measures, including greater transparency and accountability.
The growing confrontation between the government and the Opposition has also disrupted the functioning of Parliament.
