Tripura BJP MLA Tafajjal Hossain urges the Muslim community to prioritize modern education over religious studies, stressing that higher academic learning and national education are crucial for socio-economic development, empowerment, and meaningful participation in India’s nation-building process.
The state’s lone Muslim MLA from the Bharatiya Janata Party, Tafajjal Hossain, on Tuesday called upon members of the Muslim community to prioritize modern education over exclusive religious studies in order to achieve long-term socio-economic development and greater participation in national progress.
Hossain made the appeal while speaking at the inauguration of a minority welfare scheme, where he highlighted education as the key factor in improving the economic and social standing of the community. According to him, insufficient access to modern education has long hindered the growth and empowerment of many families.
“Lack of proper education is a major reason behind our stunted socio-economic growth,” Hossain said during his address. “Because we are not adequately educated, we often become vulnerable to being influenced or used by others. Education gives people the ability to think independently and build a better future.”
The legislator noted that many families within the community still prefer to send their children to traditional religious institutions rather than enrolling them in the state’s modern education system. He pointed out that this trend often limits opportunities for young people in a rapidly changing world.
“Influenced by religious clerics, many parents send their children to Madrasas with the aim of training them as Imams or Moulanas,” he observed. “While religious education has its own importance and value, it should not replace modern education that equips students with knowledge and skills necessary for professional careers.”
Hossain explained that religious scholars serve important roles within the community but their responsibilities remain largely limited to religious guidance and rituals. In contrast, he said, students who pursue modern education can explore diverse professional paths and contribute more broadly to society.
“An Imam or Moulana performs specific religious duties,” he stated. “However, when a young person obtains higher education degrees such as a BA or MA, he or she gains the ability to work in multiple sectors — administration, teaching, technology, healthcare, or public service. Such education empowers individuals to contribute to the overall development of society and the nation.”
Emphasizing the importance of national identity and collective responsibility, Hossain also called for greater unity and commitment toward the country’s progress.
“The nation must always come first,” he said. “After that comes society and then the individual. If we adopt this mindset, we will move forward together as responsible citizens.”
He further encouraged parents to enroll their children in government-supported educational institutions that provide modern academic training alongside opportunities for personal and professional growth.
The MLA’s remarks have sparked discussion among educators and community leaders about balancing religious education with modern academic learning. Many believe that combining both forms of knowledge could help preserve cultural identity while also preparing young people for contemporary challenges.

Observers say that the call for educational reform reflects a broader national conversation about inclusive development and the role of education in empowering marginalized communities. By encouraging young people to pursue modern studies, leaders hope to open doors to better employment opportunities, improved living standards, and stronger participation in nation-building.
