Women Outshining Men in Education, Says Vice President at Lakhpati Didi Event

Vice President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday remarked that a time might come when gender inequality could reverse, with men facing discrimination as women continue to excel and strengthen their presence across different fields.
Speaking at a gathering of Lakhpati Didis at the Hapania International Fair Ground in Agartala, the Vice President said his recent visits to several convocation ceremonies across the country had revealed a clear trend of girls outperforming boys academically.
“I have been travelling continuously for the past few days to attend convocation ceremonies in Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland, Mizoram and today in Tripura. Everywhere I went, I noticed that girls are doing better than boys and securing more gold medals. It shows that our daughters are shining brighter than our sons,” he said.

According to him, around 60 percent of the graduates in recent convocations were women. “A day may come when the gender inequality will be reversed and men may be at the receiving end. They might have to fight for equal space,” he observed.
Extending his best wishes to the women associated with the Lakhpati Didi initiative, the Vice President encouraged them to aim even higher. “Lakhpati Didis should now resolve to become Crorepati Didis. I promise that I will come back here one day to interact with you again, and by then the event should be titled as a meeting with Crorepati Didis,” he said.
Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for introducing women-centric policies, Radhakrishnan said the central government had implemented several schemes over the past decade with women at the centre of development. He cited initiatives such as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission and Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana as examples aimed at improving the living standards of women.
“The Prime Minister understands the struggles faced by women in the country, which is why he has taken several initiatives to address their concerns,” the Vice President said.
He further stated that programmes like the Lakhpati Didi initiative, Drone Didi, and the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam have significantly strengthened women’s empowerment in India.
Appreciating the efforts made in Tripura, Radhakrishnan noted that the state has set a target to designate 1.35 lakh members of Self Help Groups (SHGs) as Lakhpati Didis. “I am told that Tripura has taken an ambitious target of creating 1.35 lakh Lakhpati Didis, which is even an enhanced goal. Already more than one lakh SHG members have achieved this status. Connecting nearly five lakh women to Self Help Groups is also a commendable achievement,” he said.
Describing every SHG member as a symbol of Nari Shakti, he said initiatives like Lakhpati Didi represent an important milestone in ensuring women’s participation in national development.
“We have nearly 10 crore SHG members across the country, of whom around 2 crore have been designated as SHG Didis. The Sikho Didi platform alone has over 8,000 women enrolled,” he added.
Sharing an experience from Jharkhand, the Vice President recounted his interaction with a Self Help Group leader from a remote village. He said the SHG movement has empowered women who were once confined to household responsibilities to develop practical skills in administration, finance and management.
Calling it a “real revolution,” he said, “A revolution does not always involve conflict. It happens when a meaningful and impactful change takes place.”
Earlier, Vice President while addressing the 14th Convocation ceremony of Tripura Universitycalled upon young people to stay away from drugs and ensure that the menace of addiction does not infiltrate even their circle of friends.
The Vice President stressed the importance of maintaining complete control over one’s thoughts and actions. “You must have 100 percent control over your brain and thoughts. To achieve that, you have to reject drugs. At the same time, ensure that no one in your friend circle becomes a victim of this vicious cycle of addiction. Do not allow anyone you know to get trapped in it,” he said.
