Vice Prez urges youths to reject drugs, lead purposeful life at TU Convocation

Vice President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday called upon young people to stay away from drugs and ensure that the menace of addiction does not infiltrate even their circle of friends.
Addressing the 14th Convocation ceremony of Tripura University, the Vice President stressed the importance of maintaining complete control over one’s thoughts and actions. “You must have 100 percent control over your brain and thoughts. To achieve that, you have to reject drugs. At the same time, ensure that no one in your friend circle becomes a victim of this vicious cycle of addiction. Do not allow anyone you know to get trapped in it,” he said.

Encouraging students to lead meaningful and purposeful lives, Radhakrishnan advised them to follow two guiding principles—hard work and self-discipline. He urged them to use technology in a constructive way and focus on progress with a clear goal. “Life is not the same for everyone. Our main responsibility is to keep doing our work. Sometimes your efforts may not be recognized or rewarded immediately, but if you continue to work with sincerity, success will surely come,” he remarked.
He also cautioned students against comparing their journeys with others. According to him, people often judge success without understanding the hardships behind it. “Those who appear successful to us have also faced failures. The difference is that we are often unaware of their full story. Our duty is to keep giving our best with patience and determination,” he added.
Referring to a Tamil poem, the Vice President highlighted the need to dream big and work relentlessly. “It is important to dream boldly and work tirelessly. Through education and innovation we elevate not only ourselves but also the nation. When we rise above divisions, nothing can stop Bharat from reaching new heights of greatness,” he said.
Praising the efforts of the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Radhakrishnan said the past decade had witnessed continuous efforts to unlock the true potential of the Northeast region. “From improved connectivity to rapid infrastructure development, there has been a sea change. There was a time when it was not possible to reach Agartala from Chennai within a day. Today, it has become possible,” he noted.
He also appreciated the research activities and intellectual property creation at the university. Referring to the state government’s initiative to develop the Matabari Tourism Circuit with an investment of ₹450 crore, he highlighted the growing number of visitors to the Tripura Sundari Temple. “The number of devotees visiting the temple has increased from 3.5 lakh to 8.5 lakh, creating a major economic activity in the region,” he said.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also spoke at the ceremony, described the graduating students and research scholars as the future architects of “Viksit Bharat.” He praised Tripura University for developing into a multicultural, multilingual and cosmopolitan hub of higher education in the state. The Chief Minister also said that the government is planning to establish more public and private universities in Tripura.
Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu, who is also the Chief Rector of the university, addressed the gathering during the event.
Vice Chancellor (in-charge) Professor Shyamal Das delivered the welcome address and presented the university’s report. He informed that the university currently has a student strength of 4,418 with 104 academic programmes in operation. “The university has 45 academic departments and 64 affiliated colleges,” he said, adding that it has recently been granted 15 patents. He also mentioned the registration of the university’s in-campus startup venture, NH Technovations.
Tripura Chief Secretary J. K. Sinha was also present at the convocation ceremony.
A total of 145 students from the academic year 2024 and 139 students from the academic year 2025 received their degrees, while 149 PhD scholars were awarded doctoral degrees during the convocation.
