Vice Prez Radhakrishnan says India’s Northeast is central to national development under PM Narendra Modi, highlighting connectivity projects, entrepreneurship opportunities and sustainable growth during the 20th convocation of Mizoram University in Aizawl.

India’s Northeast region has been placed firmly at the centre of the country’s development narrative under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan said on Saturday while addressing the 20th Convocation ceremony of Mizoram University in Aizawl.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to the progress and integration of the Northeastern region with the national mainstream, the Vice President said that sustained infrastructure expansion, improved connectivity and targeted development initiatives are transforming the region’s economic and social landscape.

Speaking before graduating students, faculty members and distinguished guests, Radhakrishnan noted that the Northeast has emerged as a strategic priority for India’s growth story. He stated that improved connectivity through projects such as the newly inaugurated Bairabi–Sairang railway line is playing a key role in linking remote areas with major economic hubs, thereby opening new avenues for trade, tourism and employment.

The Vice President further emphasised that flagship government programmes like the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) regional aviation scheme and the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE) are accelerating the pace of development across the region. According to him, these initiatives are not only enhancing infrastructure but also bringing the people of the Northeast closer to opportunities in education, business and innovation.

Radhakrishnan also highlighted the national vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, urging young graduates to look beyond traditional job-seeking mindsets. Instead, he encouraged them to become job creators and entrepreneurs who can harness the immense potential of the region.

“The youth must move beyond the idea of only securing employment and instead focus on creating opportunities for others,” he said, stressing the importance of innovation and self-reliance.

Pointing to the unique strengths of the Northeast, the Vice President said that sectors such as tourism, bamboo-based industries, organic agriculture, handicrafts and digital services hold immense promise for economic growth. He added that these sectors can generate sustainable livelihoods while preserving the region’s cultural heritage and natural environment.

However, Radhakrishnan also expressed concern about the growing threat of narcotic drug abuse among young people. He urged students to remain vigilant against such social challenges and adopt disciplined, purposeful lifestyles.

“The youth must stay away from narcotics and focus on constructive activities that contribute to personal growth and national development,” he said.

The Vice President also advised students to use technology and social media responsibly. While acknowledging the transformative power of digital platforms, he cautioned that technology must be used as a tool for knowledge, creativity and progress rather than becoming a source of distraction.

“You must strive to become masters of technology and not its servants,” he remarked.

During his address, Radhakrishnan praised Mizoram’s rich natural heritage, strong tribal traditions and high literacy rate. He lauded the people of the state for their environmental awareness and commitment to sustainable living.

The Vice President also commended Mizoram University for adopting environmentally responsible practices, particularly its use of solar energy for a significant portion of campus operations. He urged young graduates to play a leadership role in promoting environmental sustainability and climate-conscious development.

Congratulating the graduating students, Radhakrishnan called upon them to contribute actively to the nation-building process and help realise the vision of a developed India by 2047.

He also remarked on the scenic beauty of the university campus, describing it as one of the most picturesque educational institutions in the country.

“Mizoram University stands as a symbol of what education can achieve when it is rooted in peace, purpose and environmental harmony,” he said.

The event marked a significant academic milestone for hundreds of students while also highlighting the growing national focus on the Northeast as a key driver of India’s future development.
