Teliamura Municipal Council launches eviction drive to remove illegal footpath encroachments, deploys bulldozers and CRPF for security, acting under Supreme Court directives to restore pedestrian movement and reduce traffic congestion across key town roads.

The Teliamura Municipal Council on Saturday launched an eviction drive to remove alleged encroachments from public footpaths across key areas of Teliamura town. Officials said the move was undertaken in compliance with directives issued by the Supreme Court of India regarding the clearance of public spaces and restoration of pedestrian rights.

The drive targeted unauthorised structures and temporary stalls that had reportedly been set up on government-owned footpaths along several busy roads. According to municipal authorities, a number of traders were operating without valid vendor licences, leading to obstruction of pedestrian movement and contributing to traffic congestion in commercial zones.

Bulldozers were deployed early in the day to demolish temporary shops and kiosks allegedly encroaching upon pavements. Municipal officials stated that the action was aimed at ensuring smooth and safe passage for pedestrians, reducing road blockages, and restoring public spaces for their intended use.

Although officials present at the site refrained from offering detailed statements to the media, sources within the administration indicated that the eviction drive is part of a broader statewide initiative to eliminate illegal encroachments from urban areas. The initiative, they said, is focused on improving civic infrastructure, enhancing road safety, and maintaining regulatory discipline in municipal jurisdictions.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer Pradip Kumar Sarkar and DCM Biswajit Majumdar were present during the operation, supervising the implementation of the eviction process. A substantial contingent of police personnel from Teliamura police station was deployed to maintain law and order. In addition, jawans from the Central Reserve Police Force were stationed at strategic points to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure the smooth execution of the drive.

Security arrangements were tightened in anticipation of possible resistance from affected traders. While the operation was largely carried out without major disruptions, some shopkeepers expressed dissatisfaction over the demolition of their establishments. Several traders claimed that they had been running their businesses for years and argued that alternative arrangements should have been provided before initiating the eviction.

On the other hand, many local residents welcomed the move, stating that persistent encroachments had made walking on footpaths nearly impossible. They said pedestrians were often forced onto the main roads, increasing the risk of accidents and worsening traffic congestion during peak hours.

Authorities maintained that the action was conducted following due process and prior notices, though specific details about notice periods were not disclosed. The civic body reiterated its commitment to balancing urban development with lawful commercial activity and indicated that further drives may be conducted if necessary.

The eviction drive marks a decisive step by the municipal administration toward reclaiming public spaces and enforcing urban regulations, signaling stricter monitoring of unauthorised commercial activities in the town.
