Nearly half of the Tripura–Mizoram natural gas pipeline under the Northeast Gas Grid has been completed. The project aims to supply clean energy to households, industries, and transport sectors, strengthening regional energy security and infrastructure.

The ambitious North East Natural Gas Pipeline Grid is steadily progressing, with nearly half of the critical Tripura–Mizoram natural gas pipeline already laid, according to officials of Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited. The 119.5-kilometre pipeline, a key component of India’s long-term energy infrastructure strategy in the Northeast, is scheduled for full completion by December 2027.

The pipeline originates at the Panisagar receiving terminal in North Tripura and extends through strategically important locations including Kanhmun, Zawlnuam, Kawrthah, Tuidam and Darlak before entering Mizoram near Mamit. From there, the alignment continues through Lengte and finally terminates at the proposed Sihhmui receiving terminal, situated approximately 21 kilometres from Aizawl, the state capital.

Officials associated with the project stated that once operational, natural gas received at the Sihhmui terminal will be supplied to households in Aizawl city through Tripura Natural Gas Corporation Limited (TNGCL). This development will significantly expand piped natural gas connectivity in Mizoram, offering cleaner, more reliable, and cost-effective energy for domestic consumers.

The progress of the project was reviewed on Wednesday during the visit of Mizoram’s Civil Supplies Minister, B Lalchhanzova, to Agartala. During his visit, the minister held detailed meetings with senior officials of TNGCL and the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). He also inspected a compressed natural gas (CNG) station and visited a residential complex where pipeline gas is already being supplied to nearly 330 households, showcasing the practical benefits of gas-based infrastructure.

Authorities emphasized that the Tripura–Mizoram gas pipeline will play a transformative role in supporting multiple sectors, including domestic consumption, commercial establishments, industrial units, and the transport sector. The availability of natural gas is expected to reduce dependence on conventional fuels, lower energy costs, and contribute to environmental sustainability across Mizoram.

The project also strengthens Tripura’s position as a critical energy hub in the Northeast, reinforcing its role in regional gas distribution and economic integration. As part of the broader Northeast Gas Grid initiative, the pipeline aligns with the central government’s vision of ensuring balanced regional development, improving energy access, and boosting industrial growth in the region.

With steady progress on the ground and inter-state coordination gaining momentum, officials remain confident that the project will be completed within the targeted timeline, ushering in a new phase of energy security and development for the northeastern states.
