Lakadong Turmeric Mission Golden Spice launched for farm-to-global

 
Union Minister for the Development of the North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia today launched the Lakadong Turmeric Mission Golden Spice along with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in New Delhi. Mission Golden Spice is a project under the Ministry’s Unlock the Economic Potential of India’s Northeast (USP) initiative and is worth over 175 crore rupees. Mr Scindia noted that with the world’s highest naturally occurring curcumin content, Lakadong Turmeric is globally acclaimed for its exceptional quality, making it one of India’s most distinctive agricultural treasures. Mr Scindia said the spice had generated strong interest among world leaders, and called on the Mission’s stakeholders to ensure that the crop’s quality, authenticity, scale and sustainability help it fly high on the global stage. He added that the Mission will build a farm-to-global-market ecosystem, expand cultivation to 7 thousand hectares, double farmers’ incomes, create over 3 thousand women-led jobs and build a hundred crore Lakadong Turmeric economy by financial year 2028-29. The Minister further noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is building global value chains for the Northeast’s finest products while creating greater value for the farmers of the country.
The Mission is designed as a five-year roadmap to be implemented in two phases starting from 2025 till 2030. Phase One is Value Chain Strengthening followed by Phase Two that is Expansion and Scale-up, for promotion of Meghalaya’s Unique Selling Proposition (USP), the GI-tagged Lakadong Turmeric.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the Mission is built on years of institutional groundwork laid by the state government, officials and farmers. He noted that the mission reflects the Union Government’s mission mode approach of identifying one unique product from each North Eastern state and building a complete, replicable model around it. Mr Sangma thanked  Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his sustained attention to the northeast and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working with the Union Government to replicate the model for other Meghalaya products such as pineapple, ginger, jackfruit, honey and mushrooms.
