Makar Sankranti celebrations sweep rural regions as traditional rituals, festive foods, community bonding and vibrant markets highlight the cultural richness of village life and the enduring spirit of the harvest festival across the state.
Makar Sankranti brought widespread festive enthusiasm across the state on Tuesday, as rural regions resonated with age-old traditions, spiritual rituals and vibrant community participation. The harvest festival once again highlighted the enduring cultural roots of village life, where customs continue to be preserved with devotion and collective joy.
Observed as one of the most auspicious occasions in the Hindu calendar, Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the sun into Capricorn and signifies the beginning of longer days. In rural areas, the festival holds special importance as it coincides with the harvest season, symbolising prosperity, gratitude and renewal.
From early morning, villagers were seen gathering at ponds and rivers for ritual bathing, an act believed to purify the body and soul. Traditional earthen hearths were lit at dawn to welcome the new season, reinforcing a deep connection between daily life and nature’s cycles. These practices, passed down through generations, continue to define the festival’s spiritual essence.
Homes across villages buzzed with activity as families came together to prepare a wide variety of traditional rice-based delicacies. Handmade sweets, steamed cakes and pan-fried treats were prepared collectively, strengthening family bonds and encouraging intergenerational participation. The aroma of freshly cooked festive food filled village lanes throughout the day.
A striking display of rural artistry was witnessed in Sripur village under the Dharmanagar subdivision. Almost every household decorated its courtyard with intricate floor patterns made from natural materials. Men, women and children participated enthusiastically, reflecting a shared commitment to preserving folk traditions that are gradually disappearing from urban life.
Local markets experienced a significant surge in activity ahead of the festival. Fish markets were crowded with buyers as stalls displayed an impressive variety of freshwater and river fish. Meat shops also reported brisk sales, with families opting for elaborate meals to mark the occasion. Vendors noted that festival demand provided a much-needed boost to the rural economy.
