A senior Agriculture Department official was hospitalised after an alleged domestic assault and confinement by his wife in Belonia. Police have begun preliminary verification as the victim cites concern for his children while seeking medical treatment.
An Assistant Director of the state Agriculture Department was hospitalised after he was allegedly assaulted and illegally confined by his wife at his official residence in Belonia, triggering concern among local residents and officials. The incident, which came to light on Tuesday morning, has raised serious questions about domestic violence against men and workplace safety for government officials.
The victim has been identified as Sandeep Chakraborty, an Assistant Director posted in the Agriculture Department. According to police and local sources, Chakraborty was rescued from the kitchen of his government-allotted quarters, where he was allegedly locked in after being brutally assaulted. He was found with multiple bruises, cuts, and visible lacerations on different parts of his body.
Following the rescue, Chakraborty was immediately shifted to Belonia District Hospital, where doctors provided medical treatment. Hospital authorities confirmed that his condition was stable, though he required observation due to the nature of his injuries.
Local residents stated that the assault allegedly occurred late on Saturday night after an argument between Chakraborty and his wife, Bichinta Pali. The victim alleged that during the dispute, his wife attacked him with a sharp object and later confined him inside the kitchen by locking the door from outside.
Speaking to reporters from his hospital bed, Chakraborty described the attack as unprovoked and violent. He claimed that when he attempted to defend himself, he was repeatedly struck, resulting in multiple injuries. He further alleged that he remained trapped inside the locked kitchen throughout the night, unable to seek help.
The incident surfaced on Sunday morning when a house maid arrived at the quarters for routine work. Upon noticing that the kitchen door was locked, she reportedly unlocked it and found Chakraborty lying injured on the floor with blood-stained clothes. Alarmed by the scene, she immediately informed neighbours, who arranged medical assistance and alerted authorities.
Chakraborty also alleged that he had been facing sustained physical and mental harassment for several years. He claimed that he was often pressured to meet unreasonable demands and subjected to humiliation when he resisted. He further alleged that his wife’s parents encouraged her actions, worsening the situation.
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, Chakraborty said he had not yet filed a formal police complaint. He cited concerns about the future of his two children as the primary reason. “I have been tolerating everything for the sake of my children,” he said.

Police officials confirmed that they were aware of the incident and had initiated a preliminary verification. “If a formal complaint is lodged, medical reports will be examined and appropriate legal action will be taken,” a senior police officer said.
The case remains under initial scrutiny as authorities await further developments.
