A contractor was seriously injured in a violent clash over tendering in Kailashahar, Tripura. The attack near Irani Primary Health Centre triggered tension, prompting heavy police deployment as authorities launched an investigation into the politically sensitive incident.
Kailashahar, a politically sensitive town in Tripura’s Unakoti district, once again witnessed unrest on Monday after a violent clash reportedly linked to disputes over government tendering processes left a local contractor seriously injured. The incident has heightened concerns over law and order in the region, which has seen repeated confrontations over public works contracts in recent months.
The injured contractor has been identified as Mizanur Rahman Sagar, a resident of Kailashahar who is actively involved in government-related construction work. According to his statement given to the police, the incident occurred near the Irani Primary Health Centre, where he was supervising ongoing work at his designated site.
Sagar alleged that while he was present at the location, a group of unidentified miscreants suddenly arrived and launched an unprovoked and violent attack on him. He claimed that the assailants struck him repeatedly, with a severe blow to the head causing him to lose balance and collapse on the ground. Eyewitnesses in the area reported seeing him lying in a pool of blood before help arrived.
Hospital sources confirmed that the contractor sustained serious head injuries and required eight stitches. He was initially provided emergency treatment before being shifted to Unakoti District Hospital, where doctors are closely monitoring his condition. Medical officials stated that while his injuries are serious, his condition is currently stable and under observation.
The incident triggered immediate panic in the surrounding locality, particularly because of its proximity to the Irani police station. The injured contractor alleged that the attack took place close to the police station premises, raising questions about the brazenness of the attackers and the deteriorating security environment in the area.
Local residents gathered at the spot soon after the attack, leading to heightened tension and fear of retaliatory violence. Given Kailashahar’s history of politically linked clashes over contract allocations, the situation quickly drew the attention of district authorities.
Police officials stated that personnel from the Irani police station reached the scene shortly after receiving information, rescued the injured contractor, and arranged for his immediate transfer to the district hospital. Senior officers also visited the site to assess the situation and gather preliminary evidence.
In response to the escalating tension, the district administration deployed additional police and paramilitary forces at key and sensitive locations across Kailashahar. Security personnel were seen conducting patrols and maintaining a strict vigil to prevent any further escalation or retaliatory incidents.
Officials confirmed that the situation is currently under control but remains sensitive. “We are maintaining strict surveillance in the area. No unlawful gathering will be allowed, and any attempt to disturb public peace will be dealt with firmly,” a senior police officer said.
An investigation has been formally initiated to identify and apprehend those involved in the attack. Police are examining CCTV footage from nearby establishments and questioning witnesses to reconstruct the sequence of events. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the assault was linked to rivalry over government tenders, an issue that has frequently led to clashes in the region.
Over the past few years, Kailashahar has emerged as a flashpoint for disputes involving contractors, often exacerbated by political affiliations and competition for public works. Local residents have repeatedly expressed concern over the growing trend of violence linked to tendering processes, urging the administration to ensure transparency and stronger enforcement of the law.
Political reactions to the incident are also expected, with opposition parties likely to raise questions about safety, governance, and the rule of law in the district. Meanwhile, civil society groups have called for swift action against the perpetrators and better protection for contractors and workers engaged in development projects.
As the injured contractor continues to receive treatment, the focus remains on restoring normalcy and ensuring accountability. The administration has assured that no individual or group will be allowed to take the law into their own hands, and that those responsible for the attack will be brought to justice.
