A 10-month-old baby girl from Tripura gets a new lease of life after critical Hydronephrosis Grade V kidney surgery at Tripura Medical College. Expert paediatric care, timely diagnosis, and life-saving surgery ensured complete recovery.

A ten-month-old baby girl from Tripura has been given a new lease of life after undergoing a highly complex and life-saving kidney surgery at Tripura Medical College and Dr B.R. Ambedkar Memorial (BRAM) Teaching Hospital. The infant was suffering from Hydronephrosis Grade V, one of the most severe forms of kidney-related disorders seen in children.

The critical three-hour-long surgical procedure was successfully performed by a specialised medical team led by renowned paediatric surgeon Dr Aniruddha Basak, marking a major medical milestone for the government-run healthcare institution.

Early Life and Initial Symptoms

The baby girl was born on January 19, 2025, to Durgasima Kaipeng and Puirui Kaipen, residents of the Jampuijala area of Tripura. According to medical records, the child was delivered normally at Jampuijala Hospital, and there were no immediate post-birth complications.

However, when the infant was just three months old, her parents noticed an unusual swelling in her abdominal region. Concerned, they consulted local doctors, but no conclusive diagnosis could be established at that stage. As the months passed, the swelling persisted, raising serious concerns about the baby’s health.

At six months of age, the child was once again taken to a medical facility for evaluation. Despite repeated consultations, the underlying cause of her condition remained undetected. It was only when the baby turned ten months old that her parents decided to seek specialised medical attention.

Diagnosis of a Life-Threatening Condition

The child was finally brought to Dr Aniruddha Basak, a senior paediatric surgeon at Tripura Medical College. After conducting detailed clinical examinations and advanced diagnostic investigations, doctors identified that the baby was suffering from Hydronephrosis Grade V, an advanced stage of kidney swelling caused by urine accumulation due to obstruction in the urinary tract.

Medical experts explained that in Grade V Hydronephrosis, the kidney becomes severely enlarged, leading to progressive damage and potential kidney failure if left untreated. In infants, such conditions are particularly dangerous and require immediate surgical intervention.

Dr Basak informed the parents that emergency surgery was the only viable option to save the child’s life and preserve kidney function. The parents, already emotionally distressed, consented to the operation without delay.

High-Risk Surgery and Medical Success

On December 5, a highly intricate surgical procedure was carried out at Tripura Medical College and Dr BRAM Teaching Hospital. The surgery lasted approximately three hours and involved correcting the obstruction that was preventing normal urine flow from the left kidney.

Despite the risks involved, the operation was completed successfully. Post-operative monitoring confirmed that the baby’s kidney function had significantly improved, and she was able to pass urine normally for the first time since the onset of the condition.

Doctors stated that timely intervention prevented permanent kidney damage and possible life-threatening complications. The infant is currently stable and recovering well under medical supervision.

A Family’s Emotional Journey

The successful surgery holds profound emotional significance for the family. It was revealed that the baby’s mother had suffered two miscarriages prior to this pregnancy, making the child their only surviving hope.

“This child means everything to us. We were losing hope, but the doctors saved her life,” said a family member, expressing deep gratitude to the medical team.

Strengthening Public Healthcare in Tripura

Medical professionals at Tripura Medical College highlighted that this case demonstrates the growing capabilities of government healthcare institutions in handling complex paediatric surgeries. The successful outcome also underscores the importance of early diagnosis, timely referrals, and specialised medical expertise in saving young lives.

Dr Basak and his team were widely praised for their skill, dedication, and commitment to patient care. Hospital authorities stated that such achievements reinforce public trust in state-run medical facilities and encourage families to seek timely medical assistance.
