Six-year-old Rina Reang in Tulamura, Gomati District, was saved after doctors successfully removed a fish hook. The procedure was carried out under government health schemes, ensuring timely, life-saving medical care without financial burden.

A team of doctors and health workers at Tulamura Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Gomati District successfully removed a large fish hook embedded in a six-year-old girl, Rina Reang of Gulmura village, East Tulamura. The incident, which occurred in the evening, could have turned fatal without swift intervention.

Rina was brought to the PHC around 6 PM in severe pain and struggling to swallow water due to the hook lodged in a highly sensitive part of her body. The hook’s barb prevented simple extraction, making the situation critical. Recognizing the urgency, the duty team, led by Dr. Partha Talapatra, along with Nursing Officer Sapam Ayingbi Debi and Health Worker Ahalya Debnath, immediately initiated a carefully planned medical procedure.

Upon assessing the condition, the medical team determined that minor surgery was necessary to remove the hook safely. Ensuring strict aseptic precautions, the team prepared the surgical site. Local anesthesia using 2% Xylocaine was administered to manage pain and facilitate the delicate procedure. Dr. Talapatra performed a precise incision with a surgical blade, allowing careful manipulation of the embedded hook. The team skillfully extracted the hook through the incision without causing further injury.

After the successful removal, the wound was promptly managed. Active bleeding was controlled, and the incision was closed with a fine suture using 3-0 non-absorbable thread and a reverse cutting needle. The entire procedure, though requiring high-quality surgical tools and consumables, was provided to Rina’s family free of financial burden under the Chief Minister Jana Arogya Yojana, a government initiative ensuring timely access to quality healthcare for all citizens.

Dr. Talapatra confirmed that Rina is now recovering well and in stable condition. “She is doing fine, and her family is relieved,” he said. He emphasized the importance of preventive measures, urging the local community to sanitize children’s play areas to prevent such accidents in the future.

The case highlights not only the life-saving potential of skilled healthcare professionals but also the vital role of government health schemes in ensuring equitable access to emergency medical care. Without timely intervention and government support, financial constraints could have hindered immediate treatment, putting the young girl’s life at risk.

Nursing Officer Ayingbi Debi and Health Worker Ahalya Debnath played crucial roles in assisting the surgery and post-operative care, monitoring the child for signs of infection or complications. Their teamwork ensured that the delicate procedure proceeded smoothly and that Rina received immediate and effective post-operative attention.

This incident also serves as a reminder for parents and caregivers to remain vigilant while children play in areas where sharp objects or potential hazards are present. Simple preventive measures, such as regular sanitation of play zones and close supervision, can prevent accidents that might otherwise require urgent medical attention.

The Tulamura PHC team’s swift and professional response has drawn commendations from the local community. Residents praised the team for their efficiency and for providing quality medical care under emergency circumstances. This incident reinforces the importance of well-equipped primary healthcare centers in rural areas, where access to specialized hospitals may be limited.

In conclusion, the successful removal of the fish hook from Rina Reang not only saved her life but also underscored the importance of accessible healthcare, rapid response, and preventive safety measures. Thanks to the dedicated team at Tulamura PHC and the support of government health schemes, the incident ended on a positive note, offering reassurance to families across the region about the availability of prompt, professional medical care when needed most.
