PM Modi will inaugurate the redeveloped 524-year-old Mata Tripura Sundari temple in Udaipur, Tripura, today. Revamped under the PRASHAD scheme, the iconic Shakti Peetha reflects heritage, devotion, and a new era of spiritual tourism in northeast India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the redeveloped Mata Tripura Sundari temple, one of the most sacred shrines of Hinduism and among the 51 Shakti Peethas, in Udaipur, southern Tripura, on Monday. Officials confirmed that the redeveloped temple, along with its newly beautified surroundings, will be formally dedicated in a grand yet simple ceremony.
According to a senior police official, the Prime Minister will arrive in Agartala from Arunachal Pradesh on Monday afternoon before proceeding to Gomati district headquarters, Udaipur, which is located around 65 kilometers south of the state capital. After inaugurating the redeveloped temple complex and the surrounding infrastructure, he will offer prayers at the adjacent Kali temple. Following the puja, PM Modi will return to Agartala and depart for New Delhi. As per the official schedule, the Prime Minister will not address any public gathering during this visit.
CM Manik Saha on Preparations
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has personally supervised the arrangements for the Prime Minister’s visit, making multiple trips to Udaipur and the temple premises over the past two weeks. Sharing his excitement on his official X account, CM Saha wrote:
“The enchanting nighttime supernatural view of the new infrastructure of Mother’s Abode, built under the Prasad Project! The mesmerizing complex, blessed by Mother’s grace, reflects the deep reverence and gratitude of the current government towards Mother. The entire population of Tripura is eagerly awaiting the grand inauguration by the world-renowned people’s leader, the illustrious Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji on the upcoming 22nd of September.”
The Chief Minister also shared a video showcasing the redeveloped temple and the landscaped complex, which has been given a modern yet spiritually resonant design.
A Redevelopment under PRASHAD Scheme
A senior official from the Tourism Department highlighted that the redevelopment was carried out under the Union Ministry of Tourism’s flagship PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive) scheme. The restoration and beautification project of the 524-year-old shrine cost over ₹52 crore, with the Tripura government contributing an additional ₹7 crore.
The revamped temple complex includes enhanced infrastructure, improved pilgrim facilities, and landscaped surroundings to accommodate the large number of devotees and tourists expected to visit. Officials described the Prime Minister’s inauguration as a historic moment that emphasizes the cultural and spiritual importance of the temple, both for Tripura and the nation.
Historical and Cultural Significance
The Mata Tripura Sundari temple, located in Gomati district, is regarded as the holiest temple of Tripura and is a cornerstone of the state’s cultural identity. Built in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, the shrine is among the 51 revered Shakti Peethas in India. It is considered the third most important shrine in eastern India after Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata and Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati.
Tripura, which was ruled by monarchs for centuries, became a part of independent India on October 15, 1949, after a merger agreement signed between Regent Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi and the Indian Governor General. The temple, standing strong through centuries of history, remains a testament to the devotion and architectural vision of the region’s rulers.

The 51-Shakti Peethas Park Project
Adding to the spiritual and cultural landscape, the state government has also embarked on a massive religious tourism initiative—the 51 Shakti Peethas Park at Banduar, just four kilometers away from the Tripura Sundari temple. The project, costing around ₹97.70 crore, will house replicas of all 51 Shakti Peethas from across the Indian subcontinent.
Laid by Chief Minister Manik Saha on July 13 with a Bhumi Pujan ceremony, the park aims to provide an immersive spiritual experience for devotees and tourists. Designed amidst lush greenery and a serene village environment, the park will include landscaped gardens, mythological museums, guest accommodations, food courts, souvenir shops, drinking water facilities, parking, public conveniences, and spaces for cultural activities.
Officials stated that once complete, the park will significantly boost Tripura’s profile as a religious tourism hub, creating a unique destination for pilgrims and visitors from across India and abroad.
A Blend of Devotion and Development
The inauguration of the redeveloped Tripura Sundari temple by Prime Minister Modi not only highlights the government’s commitment to preserving cultural and spiritual heritage but also underscores the integration of development with tradition. By combining infrastructural upgrades with the sanctity of age-old heritage, the PRASHAD scheme has redefined how India looks at pilgrimage centers.
