Iran, IAEA Nearing Nuclear Oversight Agreement: FM Araghchi

Must Read

Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has said that Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are “very close” to a new cooperation framework. He made the remarks at a conference in Tehran. According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, the comments followed fresh talks between Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog that began Friday in Vienna.

Araghchi also spoke about possible nuclear talks with the United States. He said messages were being exchanged through mediators.

Iran and the US had planned a sixth round of indirect talks in Oman on June 15. The meeting was cancelled after Israel carried out major airstrikes on June 13, targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites.

The US followed with strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities on June 22.

In response, Iran’s Parliament voted to suspend cooperation with the IAEA. The law bans IAEA inspectors from accessing Iranian nuclear sites unless the Supreme National Security Council confirms that security and sovereignty are protected.
