Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a Rs. 1.5 crore pond beautification project near Women’s College in Ward 22. Mayor Dipak Majumder highlighted urban development, drainage improvements, waterbody conservation and public cooperation to create a cleaner, greener Agartala.

The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a Rs. 1.5 crore pond renovation and beautification project near Women’s College in Ward No. 22, marking another initiative aimed at improving the city’s urban infrastructure, environmental sustainability and public spaces.

The foundation stone for the project was laid at a ceremony at Lal Bahadur Chowmuhani on Tuesday in the presence of Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder, the Deputy Mayor, Ward No. 22 Councillor Himani Debbarma and other dignitaries.

According to civic officials, the project will focus on renovating the existing pond and improving the surrounding area to create a cleaner, more attractive and organised public space for local residents. The initiative aims to protect the urban waterbody while enhancing the locality’s appearance and contributing to Agartala’s ongoing urban renewal efforts.

Addressing the gathering, Mayor Dipak Majumder said the municipal corporation had been undertaking various initiatives over the past several years to improve civic services, address residents’ concerns and make Agartala cleaner and more attractive.

He highlighted the importance of developing public infrastructure alongside protecting natural resources within the city. The Women’s College pond project, he said, forms part of the broader effort to restore neglected ponds and waterbodies and transform them into useful community assets.

The Mayor also discussed improvements in the city’s drainage system, particularly in areas that previously experienced waterlogging after even short periods of rainfall.

According to Majumder, the installation of pumping systems and other drainage-related measures has helped reduce the duration of waterlogging in several affected localities. He said the municipal corporation would continue taking steps to strengthen drainage infrastructure and address remaining challenges.

The issue of urban flooding remains closely linked to waste disposal practices, which can obstruct drains and affect the flow of rainwater. In this regard, the Mayor appealed to residents to cooperate with the civic body by disposing of household waste responsibly.

He urged citizens to use designated garbage collection points and AMC’s door-to-door waste collection services instead of dumping rubbish in open spaces, drains and ponds. Such practices, he noted, can contribute to drainage blockages and increase the risk of waterlogging during the monsoon season.

Majumder stressed that public participation was essential for achieving lasting improvements in the city’s cleanliness and infrastructure. While the municipal corporation was implementing development projects, he said, their long-term effectiveness depended on residents following proper waste management practices and supporting civic initiatives.

The Mayor further highlighted AMC’s efforts to clean, restore and rejuvenate neglected waterbodies across Agartala. Ponds play an important role in the urban environment, and their maintenance can support local environmental conservation while improving the appearance of surrounding neighbourhoods.

The Women’s College pond beautification project is expected to contribute to these objectives by improving the condition of the waterbody and upgrading the surrounding public space. The redevelopment is intended to provide residents with a better-maintained environment while supporting the city’s wider beautification programme.

The foundation-laying ceremony marked the formal commencement of the initiative. Once completed, the project is expected to enhance the visual appeal of the Ward No. 22 locality and contribute to the conservation of an existing urban waterbody.

AMC officials expressed confidence that the project would form part of the city’s continued efforts to improve public infrastructure, promote environmental responsibility and create cleaner neighbourhoods.

The initiative also highlights the role of coordinated civic planning and community participation in urban development. The municipal corporation has called on residents to work alongside local authorities to maintain public spaces, prevent waste-related drainage problems and protect the city’s ponds and other natural assets.

Through the Rs. 1.5 crore project, AMC aims to combine pond restoration with neighbourhood improvement, supporting its broader objective of making Agartala a cleaner, greener and more organised city.
