Biplab Deb Accuses Former Left Front Govt of Misleading Tripura with False Narratives and Biased Policies

Biplab Deb Accuses Former Left Front Govt

Lok Sabha MP and former Chief Minister of Tripura, Biplab Kumar Deb, has launched a strong and detailed critique of the previous Left Front government, accusing it of systematically misleading the people of Tripura for decades through what he described as “false slogans, selective politics, and deliberate misinformation.” Deb’s comments were made as part of his ongoing Transforming Tripura series, which he shares regularly on social media to highlight developmental changes under the BJP-led administration since 2018.

In his latest post, Deb did not mince words in holding the Left accountable for what he claimed were intentional efforts to obscure facts and keep citizens in the dark regarding both state and central government initiatives. He accused the former government of manipulating public opinion by promoting the idea of “central deprivation”—a narrative that claimed Tripura was being neglected by the central government—to garner political support.

“The slogan of ‘central deprivation’ was nothing more than a political gimmick,” Deb wrote. “In reality, it was the Left government’s own failures, short-sighted policies, and politically motivated decisions that deprived the people of their rights and benefits.”

Deb asserted that instead of working for inclusive growth, the Left regime selectively implemented welfare schemes and frequently distributed benefits based on political allegiance rather than actual eligibility. He alleged that public resources were monopolized by party loyalists and that many deserving citizens were left behind because of political bias.

One of the key examples Deb highlighted was the drastic difference in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) before and after the BJP assumed office in Tripura. According to him, between the inception of PMAY and 2018, only around 49,000 houses had been sanctioned in Tripura, with a significant portion of them reportedly going to supporters of the ruling Left party at the time.

“The scale of delivery was dismal and politically skewed,” Deb stated. “But after the BJP government came to power in 2018, nearly 4.77 lakh houses have been allotted under PMAY — and that too in a transparent, unbiased manner, without any regard for political affiliation.”

Deb also spoke at length about a major policy issue that had excluded many poor families from PMAY eligibility. He explained that homes with tin roofs, which are common in Tripura due to the region’s high rainfall, were previously considered ineligible for assistance. As a result, many families living in vulnerable conditions were unable to access housing benefits.

He claimed that after conducting a thorough review of this oversight, the BJP-led state government brought the issue to the attention of the central government. According to Deb, it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal intervention that led to a revision of the PMAY guidelines, enabling thousands of additional families to qualify for housing assistance.

“In Tripura, tin roofs are not a sign of luxury but a cost-effective and practical solution to heavy rains,” Deb said. “We explained this to the Centre, and thanks to the Prime Minister’s understanding and action, the rules were changed, unlocking benefits for countless deserving families.”

In addition to the issue of housing, Deb accused the previous Left administration of appropriating central government schemes, rebranding them as state-level initiatives to deny credit to the Union Government. He alleged that in some instances, services were even withheld from citizens simply because the schemes carried the Prime Minister’s image or bore BJP branding.

“They went as far as blocking central schemes or removing the PM’s photo from publicity materials,” Deb alleged. “This kind of political pettiness hurt the people more than it hurt the government.”

Deb’s remarks form part of a broader narrative the BJP has promoted in the northeast, positioning itself as a force for infrastructure development, welfare reform, and political transparency — in contrast to what it describes as decades of misgovernance under Left-leaning parties.

As the Transforming Tripura campaign continues, political observers expect more such pointed critiques from Deb, who remains a prominent BJP face in the region. His statements are being viewed not only as an attempt to highlight past shortcomings but also to reinforce the achievements of the BJP-led government as the state prepares for future electoral battles.
