In a major push toward renewable energy adoption, the state of Tripura has set an ambitious target of registering at least 50,000 households under the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY). The initiative, aimed at promoting solar energy usage at the household level, aligns with the central government’s vision of achieving a sustainable and self-reliant energy future.
To accelerate participation and create greater public awareness, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath inaugurated a mega awareness camp on Friday at the 79 Tilla area in Agartala. Addressing the gathering, the minister emphasized the urgent need to embrace green energy solutions, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to renewable energy as a key pillar of India’s energy policy.
“The PM-SGMBY is not just about generating solar power; it is also a pathway to economic empowerment,” said Minister Nath. He urged people to become power producers by installing solar panels on their rooftops and contributing to the electricity grid. Under the scheme, residents can install solar panels of varying capacities, with the ability to sell surplus power to the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), thereby creating an additional source of income.
Subsidies to Make Solar Power More Affordable
To make solar power adoption accessible to more households, the government is offering substantial subsidies on solar panel installations:
- 1 kW system: Costs between ₹65,000 to ₹75,000, with a government subsidy of up to ₹33,000.
- 2 kW system: Receives an increased subsidy of ₹66,000.
- 3 kW system: Eligible for a maximum subsidy of ₹85,800.
The scheme aims to reduce dependency on conventional electricity sources, lower electricity bills for consumers, and encourage a large-scale shift toward sustainable energy.
With an ambitious goal of 50,000 registrations, the Tripura government is actively promoting the scheme through various awareness programs, community engagements, and registration drives. Officials hope that increased participation will not only enhance the state’s green energy capacity but also generate employment opportunities in the solar energy sector.
The PM-SGMBY is a step toward realizing India’s commitment to net-zero emissions and strengthening the country’s position as a global leader in renewable energy adoption.
