Police arrested a woman at Kumarghat railway station with 26,000 yaba tablets worth Rs 1.5 crore. The seizure highlights intensified anti-narcotics operations and ongoing investigation into a wider drug trafficking network under the NDPS Act.

Police arrested a woman and seized a massive consignment of yaba tablets worth approximately Rs 1.5 crore during an anti-narcotics operation at Kumarghat railway station on Tuesday. The operation was carried out based on specific intelligence inputs, highlighting the growing vigilance of law enforcement agencies against the illegal drug trade in the region.

According to senior police officials, a special team of the Kumarghat police was deployed at the railway station after receiving credible information that a woman was transporting a large quantity of narcotics from Silchar by train. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, officers maintained close surveillance in and around the station premises, particularly focusing on possible exit routes used by drug couriers to evade detection.

The suspect was intercepted during a targeted search operation conducted near one of the platforms, approximately 200 metres away from the main railway station area, in the Sukantanagar Colony locality. Police officials said the location was strategically chosen by the accused to avoid routine checks and blend into residential surroundings after disembarking from the train.

During frisking and search procedures, police recovered 26,000 yaba tablets concealed on the suspect. The tablets, commonly known as yaba, are a synthetic drug containing methamphetamine and caffeine, widely associated with severe addiction, mental health disorders, and violent behavior. Officials stated that the seized contraband has an estimated black market value of around Rs 1.5 crore, making it one of the major drug recoveries in the area in recent months.

The arrested woman has been identified as Alia Khatun, aged 49, a resident of the Boxanagar area in Sepahijala district. Preliminary investigation revealed that she had traveled from Silchar by train and was attempting to move onward with the narcotics consignment when she was detained by the police team.

Police sources indicated that the manner of concealment and the quantity of the drugs suggest that the accused may be a courier working for a larger drug trafficking syndicate. Investigators are examining whether the consignment was intended for local distribution or for further transportation to other parts of the state or neighboring regions.

A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which prescribes stringent punishment for possession, transportation, and trafficking of illegal drugs. The woman has been taken into police custody, and further legal proceedings are underway.

The district Superintendent of Police stated that the investigation is being expanded to identify possible links to a wider inter-state or cross-border drug network. “We are analyzing travel routes, communication records, and possible associates connected to this seizure. The objective is not only to prosecute the carrier but also to dismantle the entire supply chain,” the official said.

Law enforcement agencies have noted a worrying trend of increased movement of synthetic drugs through railway networks, which are often exploited by traffickers due to high passenger volumes and multiple exit points. In response, police have intensified surveillance, enhanced intelligence coordination, and increased joint operations with railway authorities.

Yaba tablets, which are often smuggled in bulk due to their high demand and profit margins, pose a serious threat to public health, particularly among young people. Authorities have repeatedly warned that the spread of synthetic drugs can lead to long-term social and economic consequences, including rising crime rates and addiction-related health emergencies.

Police officials emphasized that public cooperation remains crucial in the fight against narcotics. Citizens have been urged to report suspicious activities and movements to law enforcement agencies to help curb the menace of drug trafficking.

The successful seizure at Kumarghat railway station is being seen as a strong message to drug traffickers operating in the region. Officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining zero tolerance against narcotics and assured that similar intelligence-driven operations would continue in the coming days.
