The United Nations Human Rights Council said that over 2.3 million Afghan refugees have returned from Iran and Pakistan in 2025. Many returnees are arriving under pressure in a nation ill-prepared to absorb them. The UN refugee agency urged the international community to provide urgent support stressing that the world cannot look away now. Pakistan’s deadline to deport over a million Afghans by September 1 has intensified concerns especially for vulnerable groups such as women girls and the ill. Humanitarian groups fear worsening poverty unemployment and instability in Afghanistan. UNHCR has called on Pakistan to halt forced returns and assess individual cases warning of serious human rights risks under Taliban rule.
