TSECL launches a major power infrastructure upgrade in Agartala, boosting transformer capacity at key substations to ensure stable voltage, uninterrupted electricity supply, and long-term reliability amid rising power demand in Tripura’s capital.

In a major push to make Tripura’s power supply stronger, modern and uninterrupted, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has undertaken a large-scale reform and capacity augmentation programme, with Agartala city at the centre of the first phase.

Keeping pace with the rapidly growing electricity demand has emerged as a key priority for the utility. As part of this initiative, TSECL has decided to significantly enhance transformer capacity at three major substations in Agartala to improve voltage stability and ensure reliable power supply.

Managing Director of TSECL, Biswajit Basu, said that electricity load in Agartala has been increasing at an average rate of 15 to 20 per cent annually over the past three years. This rising demand had led to voltage fluctuations, frequent transformer failures and irregular power supply in several areas. “To address these issues permanently, we have planned capacity enhancement at the substation level,” he said.

According to TSECL sources, the Pragati Power Substation currently operates with two transformers of 7.5 MVA capacity each, totaling 15 MVA. Under the new plan, two transformers of 16 MVA capacity each will be installed, raising the total capacity of the substation to 32 MVA.

Similarly, at the NSRCC substation, the existing 8 MVA transformer will be replaced with a new 16 MVA transformer, substantially increasing its load-handling capability.

Major changes are also planned at the Badharghat Stadium substation. At present, the substation has two transformers of 7.5 MVA capacity each. Soon, one 16 MVA transformer will be installed there, while one of the existing 7.5 MVA transformers will continue to operate. As a result, the total capacity of the substation will increase from 15 MVA to 23.5 MVA.

TSECL officials said that once these works are completed, the growing daily load in Agartala can be effectively managed in line with rising demand. The upgrades will also help in maintaining better voltage regulation across the city.

The power utility clarified that the reform programme will not remain limited to Agartala alone. Similar initiatives will be implemented in phases across other district and subdivision headquarters of the state. In the next stage, infrastructure upgrades at the power sub-division level are also planned to further improve service reliability.

Speaking on the initiative, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said the government’s objective is to provide every citizen of Tripura with quality and uninterrupted electricity. “Reforms in power management are being carried out in a planned manner to achieve this goal,” he said.

The minister appealed to consumers to cooperate with the electricity department and pointed out that timely payment of power bills entitles consumers to a four per cent rebate, a benefit that should be availed by all. He also issued a stern warning against power theft, stating that it would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Urging citizens to report any instances of electricity theft, the minister said that timely bill payments and prevention of power theft would enable the state to deliver a more efficient, reliable and high-quality power supply to all.
