The Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) will launch a month-long statewide campaign, ‘Nayi Chetna’, from November 25, 2025, to combat gender-based violence through awareness, community participation, and empowerment initiatives across rural Tripura under the Ministry of Rural Development’s guidance.
The Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) is preparing to roll out a comprehensive month-long awareness campaign titled ‘Nayi Chetna’ starting November 25, 2025, across all districts of Tripura. This initiative aims to combat gender-based violence (GBV) and promote gender equality through community-level engagement, training, and empowerment activities.
‘Nayi Chetna’ — meaning New Consciousness — is a flagship national campaign initiated by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), Government of India, in 2022. The campaign focuses on addressing the root causes of gender-based discrimination and violence by fostering awareness, encouraging community action, and supporting victims through local networks such as Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
A Unified Drive Against Gender-Based Violence
The TRLM-led campaign adopts a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, ensuring the active participation of multiple ministries, government departments, civil society organizations, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), and Self-Help Groups. This coordinated effort seeks to create a unified front against gender injustice, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where social awareness is often limited.
In a preparatory meeting convened by the Ministry of Rural Development earlier this week, TRLM Chief Executive Officer Tarit Kanti Chakma announced that a total of Rs 1.21 crore has been allocated to facilitate the campaign’s implementation across all eight districts of Tripura.
“The fund will be released directly from the office of the CEO, TRLM, to ensure smooth and timely execution at the district level,” Chakma stated, emphasizing the importance of efficient coordination and resource utilization.
Grassroots Empowerment Through SHGs
The campaign will make extensive use of Tripura’s strong network of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and community-based organizations, which have played a vital role in women’s social and economic empowerment. Under the Nayi Chetna initiative, SHGs will act as local change agents, organizing awareness workshops, street plays, and interactive community sessions on gender equality, safety, and legal rights.
In addition, capacity-building programs will be conducted for SHG leaders, village facilitators, and community resource persons to enhance their understanding of gender sensitivity and violence prevention. The campaign will also focus on establishing support mechanisms for victims of gender-based violence through counseling, referral services, and linkages with local authorities.
Inclusive Community Mobilization
TRLM aims to make Nayi Chetna a people-centric movement by engaging men, youth, local leaders, teachers, and community influencers. Through storytelling, folk performances, and social media campaigns, the initiative will spread messages of respect, equality, and zero tolerance toward violence.
Officials noted that the campaign’s activities will include:
-
Workshops and seminars on women’s safety and gender rights.
-
Street plays and cultural programs to raise local awareness.
-
Community dialogues involving men and boys in discussions on gender roles.
-
Helpline awareness drives for reporting gender-based violence.
-
District-level exhibitions and rallies showcasing gender equality initiatives.
Strengthening Tripura’s Commitment to Gender Equity
The upcoming Nayi Chetna campaign marks a significant milestone in Tripura’s ongoing efforts to promote gender justice and inclusive rural development. By combining awareness with actionable community engagement, TRLM aims to build safer spaces for women and vulnerable groups, particularly in rural areas where gender biases are deeply rooted.
Experts believe that sustained efforts under Nayi Chetna will help change social attitudes, empower rural women economically and socially, and strengthen institutional mechanisms for preventing and responding to gender-based violence.

As the campaign gears up for launch on November 25, TRLM officials, district administrations, and local SHG networks are finalizing plans to ensure maximum participation and impact throughout the month-long drive. The initiative reflects Tripura’s dedication to aligning with the national goal of creating a gender-sensitive, inclusive, and equitable society.
