Tripura targets a per capita income of Rs 3.70 lakh by 2030 through agriculture, tourism, and allied sectors. Minister Ratan Lal Nath emphasized oil palm cultivation, agreements with Godrej and Patanjali, and farmer empowerment as key strategies for boosting income, achieving self-reliance, and driving sustainable state development.

Farmers remain the backbone of Tripura’s economy, and the state government is determined to transform agriculture and allied sectors into the driving forces of development. Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath, while attending an Oil Palm plantation program at Fatikcherra Tea Garden today, outlined the government’s vision for sustainable growth and rising income levels.

Highlighting the government’s roadmap, Nath said that Tripura’s per capita income, which stood at Rs 1.40 lakh before the current administration came to power, has already risen to Rs 1.98 lakh. He added that the state aims to achieve a per capita income of Rs 3.70 lakh by 2030, and an impressive Rs 19.86 lakh by 2047, coinciding with the centenary of India’s independence.

“Farmers play a vital role in the development of Tripura. We have planned to utilize agriculture, tourism, and allied sectors such as horticulture, fisheries, animal resource development (ARD), solar, and forestry to ensure the state’s sustainable development. Without strengthening these sectors, overall growth is not possible,” Nath emphasized.

Oil Palm Mission for Self-Reliance

A significant portion of Nath’s address focused on Tripura’s move to promote oil palm cultivation. The Minister noted that India still depends heavily on imports to meet its edible oil demand, leading to a massive outflow of money to other countries.

“This is the only Prime Minister who has given special importance to making India self-sufficient in edible oil. Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call, Tripura is working on oil palm cultivation to reduce dependency on imports,” Nath said.

To operationalize this vision, Tripura has entered into agreements with Godrej Agrovet and Patanjali. Under this initiative:

  • Godrej Agrovet will focus on North Tripura, Unakoti, and Dhalai districts.

  • Patanjali will work in Khowai, West, Gomati, South, and Sepahijala districts.

Both companies will distribute oil palm saplings, establish nurseries, and set up dedicated processing units. Importantly, the crops produced by local farmers will be directly purchased at farm gates, ensuring better income for cultivators.

Each district will also house at least one one-stop solution center to assist farmers with technical knowledge, crop management, and marketing support. This, Nath said, will not only boost agricultural output but also empower farmers with direct market linkages.

Farmers at the Heart of Development

Nath reiterated that the state government’s policies are aligned with doubling farmers’ incomes while simultaneously enhancing the earnings of the local population. “When the income of people increases, the price of products will also rise. But with better productivity and value addition, farmers and citizens alike will benefit,” he explained.

He further stressed that Tripura’s fertile soil, especially in the North Eastern region, makes it highly suitable for oil palm cultivation, and the upcoming projects would create employment opportunities and open new avenues for rural prosperity.

Integrated Growth Approach

Tripura’s development strategy is not limited to agriculture alone. The government is adopting a multi-pronged approach by promoting tourism, renewable energy, forestry, and fisheries alongside agriculture. These sectors, Nath pointed out, are interconnected and will collectively fuel the state’s growth. For example:

  • Tourism will generate employment and showcase Tripura’s cultural and natural heritage.

  • Solar projects will create clean energy, lower costs, and reduce dependence on conventional power sources.

  • Forestry and horticulture will provide ecological sustainability while adding income streams for rural families.

  • Fisheries and ARD will expand the food basket and improve nutritional security.

By harmonizing these sectors, Tripura aims to achieve inclusive and sustainable development that uplifts both rural and urban populations.

Vision for the Future

Nath’s announcement has sparked optimism about Tripura’s economic trajectory. From Rs 1.98 lakh today to Rs 3.70 lakh in 2030, and Rs 19.86 lakh in 2047, the rising per capita income target reflects the state government’s long-term vision.

The Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment:

“Our objective is to empower farmers, strengthen the economy, and make Tripura a model state in the North East through innovation, self-reliance, and people-centric policies.”

If successfully implemented, these initiatives could mark a turning point in Tripura’s journey toward economic growth, food security, and rural empowerment.
